Hi there, i recently purchased an a3 1.8t 2001.

the probelm is that only some times, it runs sluggish...
the cars runs fine until i push the revs over 4000rpm after that the car misfires and the idle just continuosly drops at stand still... once this happens, i have to leave the car over night in order for it to run ok again...
very frustrating!

sometimes, first thing in the morning, when driving to work, the revs drop and the car stalls as soon as i put the clutch down...

these probelms only happen when they want to.

the engine management light hasnt come on...i dont understnd!

i have ben told that it could be a coil pack... but if it was, the problem would be there all the time right?

it is extremely annoying!!! please can someone advise a.s.a.p...

It could be a faulty MAF?????????

Or the Throttle Body could be clogged up, get it cleaned out and recalibrated.

This one might be less likely, but have you had your timing belt changed? How many miles has your car done?

I've normally heard/read that the belts just snap if left on too long, but I've also heard they can slacken enough to slip during either low or high revs, causing a drop in Idling speed or causing the engine to misfire as it slips.

This is less likely than the other suggestions though. I'd think your MAF or TB would be to blame.

A friend of mine has the same car and experienced the same sort of problem. he replaced the standard bosch DV with an aftermarket DV. he's now smiling like a lil kid again. DV could b the problem but then again, may not. im not sure on how 2 test if a DV is faulty.

hope you get the problem solved soon

Hey guys,
I recently had a very similar problem with my Audi A3 1.8T where the revs were going up and down and not running very smoothly in general. I also then felt that the brakes were very soggy (for lack of a better word) i then found that a few of the Vacuum and pressure hoses had very small cracks in them and a few had gone all the way through creating a leak, got a new set (2) of hoses from audi (only place that you can get ones that are any good) and fitted them and now its running beautifully. **Check the vacuum hose from the manifold that goes round the back to the brake master unit.

Cheers for that, a friend of mine thinks it may be airflow related rather than an ignition fault. Would the airflow sensor be the best place to start?
