hi people,
i am currently looking in to buyin a mark 4 golf i am in need of some advice on which to buy as im interested in the gti turbo golf and the v5 but dont really know the difference in them, such as performance, fuel costs reliability could somebody outline which is faster and what to look out for before purchasing, the v5 is a big engine and i would like to know how it is on fuel, i see that the v5 after 2000 i.e in 2001 the engine valves become 20v from a 16v is there really any difference?,
any recommendation and advice on which to buy is much appreciated,
Regards
Jeff

i would go for the 1.8t as you can get so much more power out of it with not much work.
hope this is of help.

Wouldn't touch a V5 with a barge pole! 1.8T in either variant (180bhp is better though!) all day long. The fuel consumption on the V5 is high where as the 1.8T is in my opinion very good on fuel. I get 31mpg over the last 6 months of general everyday driving and low 40's on a run.
The 180bhp 1.8T has the 6 speed box and uprated brakes, but the 150bhp is a good buy plus you can cchip them both!

I agree with Dubcruiser, the V5 is not a good engine, I would unreservedly go with a 2001 onwards 1.8T with the AUM engine which can be easily remapped up to 210PS or a 180PS Anniversary if you can find one but it will still only remap up to 210 as the only difference between a factory mid 2000 onwards 150 and 180 is programming. The six speed box of the Ani is nice as are the bigger all round and vented rear brakes.

You can pick up the 150bhps for quite cheap nowdays & a remap about £300 will get it to about 190bhp from what i've been reading. Go for it.:D

Nobody seems to be liking the V5 lump, they do sound very nice though and are very smooth. Agree with the thirsty bit but on the other hand I drive a VR6 so it's not the biggest factor for me. :D
