Needs 4 new tyres for my Audi A4 Avant 2.0 tdi 140 Sline.

235 40 18's

Thinking about:

Michelin Pilot sport 2's: £600 for 4

Dunlop SP Sport MAXX: £410 for 4

Looking for a long lasting tyre and not something rubbish. People say the Dunlop has a harder compound and will last longer but will be more noisy.

What do you guys run on ?

Throw me any thoughts you have ;) Cheers everyone.

Hi I have a 2.0tdi 140 with Dunlop SP Sport MAXX 225/45-Z18's - so far have got just over 20k from the fronts. They seem reasonably good but when I enquired about the 235/40 size I was told these would be more expensive and a harsher ride because the sidewall is lower.

As a guide price I was quoted £100-120 per tyre recently to replace mine.

Others on the board have commented on the GoodYear Eagle Asymetric as a good tyre, perhaps others can comment?
Hope this helps
Mark

I have the Michelins on mine, 21k covered so far and the fronts till have another 4-5k left in them. I'll def be replacing them with the same tyre again.

*** The Goodyear GSD3 tyre has been voted number one tyre in the market by Auto Express magazine. We agree that this tyre is one of the best all round tyres on the market. With its V shape tread this tyre is built for performance first and everything else second! This tyre is leading the way in technology with its OneTRED design combines three distinct patterns in the tread design to enhance dry and wet performance. Our customers report that the life they get out of this tyre is above anything they had previously expected. Alternatives for the Goodyear Eagle GSD3 F1 would be the Toyo Proxes T1-R or the Michelin Pilot Sport.

*** The Michelin Pilot Sport tyre has been used by some of the world’s most glamorous performance cars. The list of users includes BMW, Mercedes, Porsche, Chrysler and Ferrari. Michelin have developed and patented their C3M manufacturing technology. If you compare it on price to its competitors you will see that throughout the tyre range the Michelin tyres are at times 30% more expensive. Is this justifiable? We think it is. The tyre product is consistently good and the Michelin Pilot Sport tyre in particular offers top scores on all fronts. The only cpmpetitor we feel mounts a credible challenge is the Pirelli Pzero Rosso.

Thanks again.

Hi there,

I have the Goodyear Eagle Assymetrics on the front with about 2000miles on them and Michelin Pilot SP2's on the rear with an unknown amount of miles but more than 10,000 on the rear and I have to say the Eagles are amazing!!
Used to have a Golf GTTDI 140 and it had Dunlops on the front all the time (Company Car!!) And they were grippy but didn't last, but the Eagles are as good as them and don't seem to be wearing at all!!

Would definately recommend mytyres.co.uk as I got two delivered for £258!!

Got Avon ZZ3 235/35/19 on Split Rims BBS 861...

Not put them on the car as yet! But a lot cheaper than Mich! But won't be as good! :(

But £100 a corner rather than £ 260 it's worth a look at...

Hey there,

£95 a corner is a bargain, are you sure they are the extra load/reinforced ones?

I remember seeing some cheaper ones, but they weren't reinforced, just something to watch out for!!
Out of curiosity where have you seen them for that price??

Yep, all tagged up and brand new.

Made in Germany no the Thailand/china manufactured ones.

95Y rated so pretty high load for the Avant.

A guy on ebay selling them per pair. Has 11 sets. Going to ring him later to organise it.

£190 + £16 p&P

I'm taking 2 sets on pickup so makes it even cheaper! Awesome

I have tried the following:

Michelling PS2 - Excellent but very expensive
Eagle F1A - Superb tyre esp in wet
Bridgestone RE050A - Excellent dry grip ok in wet

Vreidestein Ultrac Sessanta - Not tied these yet but for £94 a corner you cant go wrong

Have Sport conti's 3 on front and sport conti's 2 on the rear. The front about half worn the rears on the limit. Both sets put on the same time last October, Audi is 2.0tfsi front wheel drive only.

Be handy if you could also state what mileage that equates to.

Can vouch for Conti Sport Contact 3.
Way better than the Goodyears that came off (can't remember exactly what pattern Goodies' they were, but they were not the V shaped groove ones..!)

You can lean on the Contis really hard and they just stick.. impressive. They are also wearing well (only 4k on them at moment but still look like new).

Can't grumble at £95 a tyre for goodies.
Just check they are not over-age. Check the date on the sidewall. I'd be reluctant to buy a tyre manufactured over a year ago.

My A4 came with SP Sport Maxx which were okay, 18k ish on the front and not too noisey. But as an experiment, I put Avon ZV5's on the front which are Avons most state of the art tyre in this size.

They are reasonably priced, £95 ea, but are a very average tyre to say the least. The way things are going it only looks as thouigh I will get about 13K from these. Grip in both wet and dry is very average to say the least.

Tyres tend to 'hum' when driving at 50-60 on smooth roads.

I would not really recommend ZV5's therefore, although they are keenly priced.

Mine had Bridgestone RE 040's on it when I bought it - hatefull tyre if it is wet and very noisy - all shot so went for Toyo T1-R's as I've had them on My RX8 231, Legnum VR4 - 320, 2 MX-5's (one used on the track). They cost £110 each from Camskill (http://www.camskill.co.uk/products.php?plid=m61b0s322p0) so far only 1K on them but will report back when I've done more. Got 20k out of the ones on my VR4 and that was Castle coombe'd twice.
Historically I have found the T1-R's superb wet and dry, wear is reasonable, not to bothered about how long they last more about will they hold the corner when pressed. Always run them 5psi higher than quoted as the sidewalls can be soft but these on the A4 are reinforced so trying them at 32psi all round to start... Oh and they are quiet!
I know a lot of people slag off Jap tyres but they are 100% better than they used to be.

I've had dunlops on as original spec and hated them. Wore quickly, were noisy and lacked grip.

On my second set of Falken ZE912's. Quiet and sticky and last around 18k. Cost around £95 a corner. I can't recommend them enough.

Try them, you won't be disappointed I'm sure.

Im sure Falkens are a reasonable tyre but since I had the ZE512 and they were awful bold after 15k of driving like a grandad and 2 bulges in them I wont go for falken again.

I want to try Vredestein Ultrac Sessantas Next as they seem very good at now $100 a corner.

I have had the Eagle F1A's and they are awesome, PS2 are awesome too but not worth the $170 a corner, and Potenzas RE050A are excellent too.

I also want to try Conti 3's they seem to have rave reviews at the moment so something to think about.

I've got Vredestein Ultrac Sessantas on my car, only done 1k on them so far but seem to be very good, about £90 each fitted.
