The problem will be either the actuator mechanism is faulty or the clip that the metal rod attaches to has fallen off.
I had the same problem, and replacing the actuator solved it.
The actuator is like a piston, and a rod fixes on to the piston, the other end of the rod is attached to a small plastic clip at the centre of the boot lock. when the boot catch is pressed, the actuator should move the piston to the left, thus pulling the rod and opening the boot.
Sometimes the actuator plays up and becomes intermittent, the boot sometimes opens fine, other times it won't.
If it is just the clip thats fallen off, you can glue it back on in place.

Hope this is of some help.

:biglaugh: Hi
Thank you to Weeliegh and Rick T.
Bought the actuator form Audi main dealer for £29.00 ( £35.00 plus £11.00 delivery from internet part search). Followed instructions on link and in under 1 hour boot was working.
Note be carefull pulling trim - very stiff. I only lossened the trim enough to get to the 2 screws holding the actuator in - with a short handled screw driver that was enough.
Happy days

Glad you got it sorted Steve- pleased I could be of some help. Good to know my instructions are useful!;)
I agree with the stiffness of the trim panel. I was only able to get it off far enough to get my hands in to remove the part. It's worth the effort when you get it working though.
Cheers,
Leigh.
