Bump
Hi,
I am concerned at the amount of oil which seems to end up going down the throttle body on my 1.4 Golf. I cleaned the throttle some weeks ago and it is very oily again already.
The engine is high mileage - 106K, and I am wondering if the crankcase breather is blocked. (This used to be a problem on Mk1/2s, where carbon buildup in the breather stopped oil running back into the engine and allowed it to get blown along the breather pipe into the carb/injection system.)
Any advice as to how easily the crankcase breather can be replaced, and whether this is likely to solve my problem?

hi, im in the trade and im having the same problem with a polo 1.4 16v on a 51 plate. i spoke to two guys 1 at vw and 1 at skoda and both said that if you find excess oil in the throttle body, on the map sensor or oil soaked air filters then the piston rings have had it (apparantly) this is a well known issue..................

Hi,
thanks, but piston rings are easily checked with a compression test, which is much more reliable. Unless there is a blockage in the breather system, blowback from worn rings shouldn't be a problem - more likely to cause increased oil consumption by burning it in the cylinders

Anyway, I removed the crankcase breather box yesterday, which is held onto the block by three hex nuts - much easier access from underneath the car!
I washed it out in petrol, and a large amount of crusty carbon sludge washed out. Also the rubber breather pipe was kinked and softened in two places.
I replaced the breather box and positioned the pipe to avoid kinking ( ideally I guess both should be replaced, together with the two o ring seals against the block)...
Anyway, all seems to be running nicely, I'll just have to wait and see if oil consumption has reduced
