just bought 80 quattro 2.8 was wondering if any one knows of tricks to improove performance

There are a few bolt on type mods that can be done, mainly to the intake path. Gas flowing the throttle body, mods to or replacement of the MAF sensor. And full on port and polishing/port matching of the inlet manifold. Certain early ECU types can be chipped maybe yours being an AAH is one of these?
Also worth bearing in mind that the later AFC engines had thinner valve stems at 6mm instead of 7mm in the AAH. This allowed milder cams to be used, yet still produced the same 174hp. So best candidate for porting is the AFC heads, with the wilder profile of the AAH cams
