Mk4 1.6SE Auto, stuck in 'Park"

Hi.

My 1.6SE Auto is stuck in 'Park' with the EPC light on and 'Workshop Repair' required up. This is the third time it’s happened now with each time (5-10 minutes) taking longer to right itself. Once in ‘Drive’ it drives completely normally with no loss off power or unusual noise from the gearbox. But now it is jammed and will not budge despite being left over night. Any idea anyone?

I'm not really familiar with automatic gearboxes but when you are changing from park to drive, are you required to press the brake pedal? My thinking here is that the brake light switch could be faulty and causing this problem but I could be completely wrong.

Hi Chris.

It would appeasr your right. A shed load of these Golfs were recalled in the US for this reason. It also means the brake lights don't work! I've ordered a new part.
