Idle erratic, revs dont come down quick when come to a stop!

Hi

Can any one please help!!??

i have a 1999 golf gti 1.8 20v non turbo.

sometimes it is hard to start and you have to depress the accelerator, then when it does it keeps itself revved up for quite some time until the revs finally drop. Then when the revs do drop, it is erratic. When accelerating it jerks before accelerating fine. Also when changing gear, the revs dont come down quick enough which makes gears changes far from smooth and it is getting really annoying!!
Also when it starts some time quite a strong smell of petrol or something is very noticable.

ANY help would be greatly appreciated!! please!

Hi i had the same prob with my audi 1.8t i had i changed the fuel pump and all seemed fine. change fuel filter and maybe put some fuel injector cleaner in and all should be well.

Sounds like the coolant temperature sender is faulty but first of all, you need to get a garage to do a fault code scan and see what is stored. You don’t need to go to VW for this, most garages would be able to help you.
