Hello all

I have a problem with my wipers. I have a 1998 Audi A4 and recently I had the problem of the drain hole blocking up under the battery. It had rained heavily the night before, and when I looked in the engine bay, there was literally a swimming pool in the battery section. I drained as much of it as I could (using a small bucket) and then proceeded to clear the blocked grommit. Now water runs through fine, and it has no problems in terms of water getting trapped.

I noticed this morning that my wipers now not working. No sound from the motors, and no slight movements from the blades. Could the two be connected? I have no idea on what to do to sort this, so I thought I would ask here. I've tried the wiper stalk on all avaliable settings, but nothing. My first thought was that the wiper motor had gone, but maybe the swimming pool shorted out a circuit somewhere?

Thanks to all that help :beerchug:

Could be the linkage is seized, common problem.
A new linkage is not too expensive or lube the linkage and see if it free's up.

if it was seized mechanism youd hear motor attempt to start wouldnt you?, if youve checked fuse, id test for voltage at motor or try adding current direct to it, i had a problem with mine where it would only work on full speed, i opened it up and found grease and muck over the contacts that control speed/stopping, cleaned it up and it worked perfectly, if its been flooded for a while you may have water in it?

theres two grommits by the way one under batt. tray, one behind servo, make sure you cleared both

I've not used the Audi since posting on here as it's still not fixed and I had no internet access at home. I'm sorry to sound thick, but how would I add current directly? I have no knowledge of any of the electricals, but I have a fair understanding of how to replace the motor after reading a few tutorials. The AA man said it could be a relay so don't buy a motor just yet, but I've seen them for £30-40 at scrapyards, whereas they're £125 new :|

Would a Passat of the same age have the same motor? I'm only asking because not many of the scrappys near me have A4 parts in stock, and if Passats have the same mechanical equipment as the A4, then I could significantly increase the chance of finding one ASAP. Thanks to the two posters above for responding!

Fixed. The blockage in the battery chamber (caused by blocked holes) had caused the wiper motor to literally drown and stop working. Replaced the motor and it works like magic :)
