I have an occasional flashing glow plug indicator lamp, which started as only rarely for a min or so, then stopped, but has got more regular, and today has been on all day, on all journeys. Only ill effect seems to be that cruise control refuses to engage when it's doing it.
I managed to do a vag Com scan today whilst it was flashing (it occured even before I started the engine, just with ign. on), and no fault codes reported. tried again with engine running - no errors.
Manual suggests this is engine mgt fault.
How can I diagnose this (if at all)

check your brake lights.
the switch is a two part( two sets of contacts) for low level rear lights and high level light.
if both lower bulbs have gone the glow plug light flashes.

You are a star - I recon you may have cracked it. When I said "no faults", actually it wasn't the whole story - I have a dodgy brake light switch, causing rear lights to flicker occasionally; I just assumed that I'd get an ECU fault code, and didn't expect a connection between brake lights, and the glow plug flashing - the manual explicitly indicated ECU fault, so i didn't mantion it here to avoid confusion.
I guess this must be it; And should be solved tomorrow when i fit replacement brake switch and clear that code (intermittent signal reported).
Seems strange, though, that it would use the glow plug indicator, and not the brake, or ESP/ABS lamp.
I'll report back once brake lamp switch replaced, fault codes cleared etc.
cheers,
Rich

once the switch is replaced the glow pug light will no longer flash, you shouldn't need
to clear anything.
i suppose they don't use the abs/esp lights as they are already a handful to sort!!!!!

had the same problem myself a couple of months back.both the glowplug (flashing)and esp (constant) lights came on.naturally i panicked slightly, but
did a search on the forum which suggested the brakes and sure enough both lower brake lamps were goosed....strange one,but only £3.50 to sort thankfully..........if only this was always the case.
