Can anyone please help me. My rear passenger footwell is filling up with water every time it rains. I have spoken to volkswagen and they said it could be anything and that i should bring it in but at their hourly rate i don't want a bill for hundreds of pounds!!!
The only possible cause i can think of is the membrane on the front passenger door, which i removed when i had to prop the window up after the lugs that hold it up, snapped off. I put the door back together but didn'y put the membrane back. Is that the problem? I don't understand why the water would come over the sill and into the footwell and not just drain out ???
Anyone have any possible answers????

I have just started experiencing a similar problem, but as far as I'm aware no work has ever been done on the door and the whole interior is dry except for the rear offside footwell which is a lake whenever it rains overnight. It has always been fine, no sign of any dampness until last week when I left it parked for about 3 days. whan I went to it footwell was flooded and now it happens each time it rains. Bit of an annoyance. Would appreciate any suggestions.
I have just recently come across the same problem in my 2001 1.6 Golf, however it only seems to do this after I've washed it, so was thinking I should stop spraying the jet wash inside the rear offside wheel arch, however now I see there are others with the same problem I'm guessing it could be a fault somewhere else that its leaking in. Any suggestions as my car is stinking of wet carpet and I'm sick of mopping it out with towels, I even resorted to using my flatmates hairdryer the other day !!!

I followed instrutions at http://www.weirdlittlebiscuit.com/passat/leak It was an easy job Might be easier with two getting the battery out. The drainage holes under the battery were blocked and was probably the cause. Highly reccomend giving it a go.

Hi all. I've had the same problem with a Seat Leon. When it rains the water runs down the window, behind the scraper moulding and collects in the bottom of the door. Once full it spills into the footwell due to the foam on the back of the window regulator membrane being perished and not providing a seal. Went to my local dealer & purchased a box of seal cord (dum dum) which is a sealing epoxy. Removed the door cards & regulator plate, scrape of the remains of the perished foam seal, resealed now no sign of water ingress. Hope this helps.

i had same problem it was a rubber grommit letting water in near the wiper motor on drivers side, there is a cable running through the grommit i solved it using clear silicone.worked a treat
Hi all,
Dont want to jinx my little car but I seem to have fixed it, at first I never had any problems with wet carpets, then only when I washed it but then everytime it rained so it was time to do something about it.
It was mainly the rear offside passengers footwell but when it was heavy rain it was the drivers footwell as well.
I found a huge amount of dirt on the offside near to the window wipers motor under the bonnet when I pulled it all to bits, there was enough to plant a small tree, cleared all that out, also saw the rubber grommit with a cable running through it that "michaelspain" talked about so I decided to use a bit of clear silicone on that as well in case it was that and not the dirt.
Did two days of using the hair dryer to dry the carpets out (there were puddles of water all around some electrical components under the drivers seat so Im sure that didnt help) and so far so good, no wet carpets.
All fixed via helpful folk from this forum. Cheers guys, I'm sure you saved me a small fortune !

A common cause of unwanted 'foot spas' are the drain holes to both the sunroof and/or the pollen filter becoming blocked.

hi just a quik answer for your problem, i work in a car body shop, we had a mk4 golf in 2 weeks ago with the exact same problem, we spoke to vw and it seems it is a common fault, it will be leaking through from under the scuttle panel at the front of the car at the base of the windscreen,it will be leaking around the pollen filter, hope this helps ,

I have had this problem several times on two Golfs and one Passat. it has always been the grommet that seals the bonnet release cable were it passes through the bulkhead. immediately above this grommet is where the water runs off the wiper mechanism cover, if this grommet is out of position then the water runs directly into the car and soaks the right hand drivers footwell, from there it flows to the rear footwell and is time consuming to dry out the sound insulation, often it smells like a pond too.
it is also worth keeping the drains of the sun roof clear as well. at every service when you lubricate the hinges, squeeze the tips of the drain tubes. It is surprising how much water can come out.
