Hi All
I recently fitted a new set of front brake pads to my B6 Avant, they are not Audi pads as they were expensive but all seems well in the stopping department,no better or worse than the originals which were Audi. My problem is that the NSF has a metalic"clonk" when I apply the brakes. I stripped them down again but have found nothing untoward. It pulls up straight, no pulling and no judder. My guess is that the pads are moving in the caliper. Has anybody else come across this??

if everything is assembled correctly, then as you say just a bit of loosness between pad and guide pins. if you haven't already done so, i would suggest anti sieze compound on the pins,
it may just deaden the noise a little.

Try using a bit of copper grease !

Works well every time.

Aye, if it still does it when copper grease is applied, there must be something moving. Were they good quality pads as well ?

Something sounds wrong to me. There should be no clonking noises from brakes. I changed my OEM for EBC discs and pads and have had no issues. In fact they are excellent. Cold stopping power is far crisper.

Have you still go the old pads? If so, check the new ones are exactly the same size. Who's are they?

EBC ect are a good fit they are the same size as OEM i just find that the aftermarket pads just dont fit that good and clunk

That does seem to be the rumour.. I did have a few issues getting both discs hot at first.. I am happy with them now.

And I suppose you didn't forget to reinstall the pad tensioning springs? The spring is the metal wire that attaches to 2 holes on the caliber and rests against the brake pad.

:biglaugh: I thought about that but thought against mentioning it. Having had the brakes apart again, I'm sure Andyroo checked that.... Did he?? ;)

They're an easy item to overlook so I thought I'd bring it up :)

I did once put my wheel back on and realise I hadn't put the spring clip on the caliper!!! so I agree it could have been overlooked.

Hi All
Been away for a while hence no replying. Thanks for all your suggestions. I didn't forget the tensioners but did take them to bits again after a fair bit of use over 1k miles. There is an indication that the pads are indeed moving in the caliper so I've managed to get some shimming and intend to shim the gaps up and see if it cures the problem. I'll keep you posted.

Andy.

Guys, ive had the same problem and when I changed my pads the problem disappeared but has re-appeared after the pads have worn in. Any solutions? Thanks
