I have a 2000 Passat with an AJM engine. I have problems starting the car as I have to turn it over for approximately a minute whilst pumping the throttle. When it does finally start I have lots of white smoke from the exhaust - and I mean lots! The car has recently had a new head gasket and turbo fitted. It is not burning oil so it would appear to be a fuel problem. The fuel filter has been replaced. It is as though air is getting into the system somewhere. Has anybody come across similar problems before?
Any ideas before the car goes into VW for diagnosis and I empty my wallet would be gratefuly received!!
Thanks

Hi, first, pumping the throtle while cranking does absolutely nothing as there is no phisical conection between the throtle and fuel pump, thats why is called drive-by-wire. You said that the head gasket has ben replaced, it looks that the timing is not set properly or there is not enough compression to ignite the fuel...or air in fuel.

Hi,
Thanks for the post. If I don't pump the throttle it simply won't start at all, which confuses the hell out of me! I think air in the fuel could be the more likely reason. Does anybody know of common 'leaking pipes' or has anyone suffered from similar problems?

i know this sounds silly but have you been over topping up the water?
also get the turbo rechecked and EGR
