I have just bought an Audi A4 Avant (2001) and have done a bit of searching around the forum on this subject. I have done cambelts before on other cars so am not a novice - I can't see any particular issues with the process apart from the diagnostic check/timing bit.

I have phoned up a couple of garages and diagnostric people to see what they say and I am being quoted £30-40 to have this checked. I looked at VAG.COM but as far as I can see this software can't alter the timing, but just check to see if it is right. How do you change the timing, is this done with more advanced software?

My engine code is AJM if that makes any difference.

Also, where do people buy their parts from (belt, pump, etc)? I looked at vagparts.com but once you have added up all the bits it is pretty pricey. The engine is a high miler and I would be happy using copy/mid-ranage parts on it. What would people reccomened?

Any advice appreciated.

Thanks

Hi There is no adjustment on the timing on the AJM engine,if you have replaced the timing belt,or intend, doing it,when you use the proper procedure, when you replace the belt,no further adjustment is necessary.Regarding spare parts,i would go for original VAG parts,

I have the 1995 - 2000 Haynes manual here, is there a big difference between how it describes the cambelt change in this manual to this model? What is the "proper procedure" regarding the locking of the engine, is it the same?

Thanks

Hi Kenny,

Thanks very much.

I think I need to have made 5 posts before i can PM anyone however, at this rate, give me 10 mins and I will be there.

I have just been digging around and understand AJM has a PD fuel pump. What are the main differences? I did see a reference to cambelt change intervals and this engine was said to be 100k instead of the 80k (although I know best to change earlier!). Is it true that the interval is longer?

Have done some more digging on the PD engine so am a bit clearer.

I have seen some locking tool kits on ebay for about £35, are these neccessary? I imagine an allen key would do the job of one of them, but the other looks a bit more tricky.

Also, where to people recommend buying parts from?

On the PD engine there is no adjustment compared to engines with an injector pump, which is first placed in basic setting and with the engine running, then must be adjusted with diagnostic equipement. The AJM engine i think was 60000 km change interval for the cambelt, not too sure, but i do know it was not 100k.As i said previously use original VAG parts, they come with a 2 year warranty.
