I have looked through a lot of posts on the forum and many refer to an interface cable for connecting a laptop to the car to interrogate fault codes. can anyone tell me the software required, the operating system and memory required for this operation. and where can it be purchased. thanks in advance

You can't have searched very far! Try searching the forum for "VAG-COM", or Google it - there are hundreds of posts regarding this piece of kit.

perhaps you would be kind enough to save me some time by pointing me in the right direction! I need some software, free if possible, to reset service light, on an audi a4 tdi 90 bhp 1995. Cheers!

You can reset the service ligh using the buttons on the dash.
Its in the manual.
This resets the car to fixed servicing.

What buttons on the dash? What is in the manual? Service warning light, comes in different stages depending on the time elapsed after the the service point; i.e., when the appropriate mileage is reached after the previous service. There are no buttons but a cable to attach to laptop and read the codes and then reset the codes using the software. Now, as my car is a 95 1.9 tdi model, it needs the right type of cable and software (OBD? or what? and VAG or what) that is what I am trying to find out.
