Hi Your engine does not have a cam position sensor

fault code came up as cam position sensor, could this realy be the crank position sensor, this went down (cable insulation broke and shorted out) and caused me to need towing home, i replaced it with a patent part (which was faulty and exchanged and replaced again) also will this cause the fuel pump relay to click on and off??

There is no position sender on the cam or the cranck, but there is an engine speed sender G 28,and a faulty sender will cause the engine to stop,as it sends signals to the ECU ,which sends the signals to the fuel pump relay. The engine speed sender is to the right of the oil filter,on the block,it has a 3 pin connector which is near the starter,i can give you the measuring values to check it if you want?

ah right the part which was replaced was listed as a crank position sensor part no 037906433C when i asked for this part qoting crank position sensor at the motofactors and at vw (who gave me the part number) they both quoted on a part for another car i guess (even though i gave my reg) so i must have fitted a crank position sensor to a car which dosnt have one, oops and someone in the past has done the same as the faulty part i took off was listed as a crank position sensor, guess i will will have to find out the old way, thought maybe i could get help here. maybe this link will help you understand that maybe there is a crank position sensor or maybe its yet another motorfactors who dont know what parts they are selling??????

037906433c is the engine speed sender G28 it has now the part nr 037906433a.I can not understand why they call it a positiion sensor which has a different function, anyway call it what you will, but i think it is this sender which we are all refering to

i think we are talking about the sensor, sorry if i seemed a bit sarky, im at the end of me teather at the mo with this car, ihave fitted a new sensor and now getting intermittant fault hal sender, now since i am a single parent and skint coz of it i bought a fuelparts sensor from my local motorfactors, could this be the problem, i have since read some of their parts aint worth a squat???? im not sure i can aford the £160 + vat vw want esp if it isnt the problem

HEEEELLLLPPPPP please

It is always best to use original VAG sensors-senders.Not too sure what you mean by fuel parts sensor, An intermittant fault with the hall sender will not cause the engine to stop,in fact you can remove the hall sender connector on the distibutor and the engine will still run.Getting back to the start of your problem is the engine still stopping?and have you used a Vag engine speed sender G28?

ok a fuelparts sender is the make of the sender i bought, it is a german company that sells aftermarket parts, i have been looking on the internet and some ppl seem to be putting them down, anyway to get back to the problem with my car, the sensor i replaced (if you click on the link above this is the sensor i replaced) seems to be faulty, when i got the car plugged in the code came up as an intetmittent fault on the cam position sensor (you have said already it dont have one of them) the guy that plugged it in said if it aint got a cam position sensor it must be the crank/speed one so do i take it this could be it? i have already replace the coil and distributer, when i first replaced the speed sensor the fault went, till the engine got up to operating temp then cut out all together, i replaced the speed sensor with another one (exchanged at mororfacors) but now has the fault code and wont run properly (seems to be in limp home mode, crap mpg over fueling wont rev out)and now seems to have an intermittant fault as in it coughs and splutters at times and cuts out and the rev counter drops instantly

Okay it looks like the cranck speed sender, and there has been problems with after market senders. You have replaced the coil and the distibutor, the hall sender i mentioned previously is in the distributor,so you can rule out that.If you want i can send you a diagram of the ignition system,so you can see the components, and there proper names?????.But at the end of the day i fancy the fault is with the after market engine speed sender, send your e-mail address if you want the diagram

Concerning these two sensor, The ADY Engine has both these sensors, the one next to the oil filter is the Engine Speed Sensor, and the Camshaft Position Sensor is not on the camshaft end, silly I know but this sensor is also know as the hall semder which is located inside the distributor.

ok sorted this now, this may help others here, at some point in the cars past when the cam belt has been changed (only discovered this when i changed the cambelt last week) the distributor timing sprocket was misaligned this ment the distributor timing was out dispite being setup acording to the dizy marks and was returning the hall sender code, also i would like to point out to all DO NOT use fuel parts crank position sensors they are cr** as soon as the engine got up to running temp the sensor broke down causing backfire and now had to buy a new maf too, 3 sensors I got from the motorfactors all had faults, bought gen part from vw and car has been fine since, think the moral of the story here is maybe there is a reason gen parts cost more, ie they work lol
