What year B5...I don't think the alarm conf 'beeb' was set to be on by default...you need to activate it using vagcom/VCDS or dealer...

It's the same unit for the alarm itself...so to test set of your alarm....no sound...broken unit....again this should show up on a scan...as a guide the battery in those units only lasts 5 years or so....and if it leaks all over the inside of the unit it can cause problems...mine was just starting to show a code on cold days...so swapped for the new version one...

If the unit is missing the car will still arm etc from what I recall when I changed mine...I've still got my old one....

also i think that only b5s from '97 onwards definitely had the module which could be coded with VAGCOM to allow arm/disarm beep. pre '97 it was either an option, or pot luck if you had the module IIRC.

interestingly my B6 cab is showing signs of this same fault as of yesterday. alarm randomly going of, not stopping with disarm etc.

siren units are around £85 from www.vagparts.com

or battery replacement guide HERE (http://www.tt-forum.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=73315&highlight)

requires a dremel and glue gun, and some batteries from maplin at around £15 for the pair.

hth :)

just for your info, i just phoned the local dealers for a price on a siren unit, and it was cheaper at the dealers by a few quid, plus i wouldnt need to pay £p+p.
