noticed today on my a4 1.9tdi quattro 1998 that as i looked down at the engine there are 2 pulleys at the very bottom and to the left that the belt doesnt go round.one of them i can spin by hand (maybe a tensioner)but the other wheel is solid and wont turn (looks like an alternator type unit).
any ideas what these are and why they would have been left off the belt system
the air con doesnt seem to work wondered if the big unit was to do with this....???
thanks for your help

Yeah, that's your AC compressor and the crankshaft pulley !

No, it wont cause any problems. I think the compressor seized and it took the belt with it as well...It will cost a few quid to put right though.

Hi Adamss24
Just a quick question ... do you know how many belts the car should have? I know theres one for the timing belt and the other for the alternator. Does this not also power the AC unit? or is that a separate pully?
When i turn my AirCon on, i can hear the blower increase in speed but the air does not cool at all. I only re-filled the gas last year and have hardly used the air-con, any ideas?
Recently my i have the Alternator Belt and Timing belt changed.

You need to have a fault code scan to see what comes on...Not using the aircon is a big No No as the seals dry out and will let the refrigerant escape if not used too often. If there is a fault pointing to a high pressure switch, you might be again without refrigerant. Also, a faulty coolant temp. sensor will disconect the AC as well. Do you see the AC clutch spinning when the AC is switched on ? Also, does the electric fan turns on when the AC is on ?
