Hi

I had the misfortune of the pass floor well becoming soaked. I searched the forum and found out what to do to cure this and found out the 2 drains under the battery were clear !.
I then moved onto the intake/plenum chamber and found i need to remove the large plastic panel that runs across the car ( under the screen) so as to get to the 3rd nut hidden at the rear of the bracket mount . (As this has a split in it i may as well replace it anyway. over enthusiastic VAG breakdown man trying to shove a Halfords battery into the to small space !)

Problem is, I'm not sure how this comes off , any advice on how to remove it or whats in the way would be helpfull thank you. Then i can get the 3 nuts off the old pollen filter housing and replace it ( already have the parts due to reading this forum )

On cleaning out the debris from the N/S bonnet hinge i poured water in to wash it away, (and without getting it into the plenum chamber), i found the inside of the passenger floor well wet again.
Further inspection shows its coming down from the side of the carpet and not the front of it, any tips on what the problem is here will be gratefully accepted. Until i figure out how to remove the main panel i dont know whats behind the N/S bonnet hinge or if it goes straight into the car .
(Its always possible that its the plenum chamber still needs doing) but maybe something else

many thanks

Hi , you will need to remove the windscreen wipers (probably the worst bit, you will need a puller.), then the Plastic water deflector shield (the scuttle).
See this link :- http://www.weirdlittlebiscuit.com/passat/leak/ and this one :- http://www.vwaudiforum.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?t=12677

Buy a new Pollen filter case and a new scuttle (circa £20 all in) and ask the dealer for the elastomar sealing strip that they use for the outer seal of the pollen filter housing. (normally free ) as the origional seals rots and seems to only have a 3-5 year life.
Do not use any tools to prise off or refit the scuttle unless you want to pay for a new windscreen.
The scuttle comes off from the outer edges is brittle and prone to breaking.
It goes on by fitting it into the slot of the rubber seal at the base of the windscreen. Tip. use soapy water and fit it in the middle 1st and work out to the edges.
After work will be to ensure that no wiring damage has occured in the footwell, and no water has penetrated the electronics box under the carpet.(if you get funny alarm, doorlocking or window operations this will be the reason):- http://www.headfuzz.co.uk/?q=vw_ccm
Good luck regards Richard

Richard

Thank you for that, i feel more confident aout attacking it now than i did yesterday :)

I armed myself with the new "scuttle" this morning, and even borrrowed some small pullers in readiment.
Will post an update on my sucsess or failure later today

everything went great till i managed to snap the new scuttle into 2 :banghead:
i would suggest dropping it into place from above the bonnet instead of trying to bend it round the bonnet hinges
at least i now know how brittle these things are :aargh4:.

Only thing i would add to any of the threads about wet floors, and the pollen filter issue is that its worth taking the wiper arms off before you disconnect the battery .
I got a set of very small pullers, but could not get onto the drivers wiper arm as its to close to the bonnet . I reconnected the battery , and stopped the ignition as the arm was at its furthest point from the park position, then it was easy to use the pullers.

I also used a mastic as opposed to silicone sealer . mastic from a tube (like a silicon tube you use in a trigger gun) never actually dries out so I will tell you how it worked when I get a new scuttle on and soak it with a hose pipe

Mine has been wet on two occasions. The second time I used car body panel sealant on the A/C ducting joint. Not had a problem since.

My drain holes were not blocked on either occasion, though the first time there were a few leaves around the bonnet hinge. I think they were enough to slow the flow of the water into the plenum to then divert it through the crap ducting joint.
