I've just finished changing the original timing belt, tensioner and damper on my 12 year old 1.8 A4 (the ADR petrol engine) after 117,925 miles - I'll claim this as a World Record for A4 timing belts until anyone out there goes further on their original timing kit and then they can claim the record!
All of the original bits looked fine but the Audi technician reckoned that I was lucky that the damper hadn't snapped (as they were prone to do).
The new parts were easy to fit once Audi had supplied me with the correct ones - the tensioner pulley that they first supplied had a 6mm washer on the block side that caused the belt to misalign with the sprockets. It was fortunate that I noticed this misalignment before I put it all back together and, after measuring the original tensioner and doing some research on the Web I found the part number for the correct tensioner for my engine...one with a 3mm washer.
The guys in the parts department were adamant that they had supplied the right part, and I was adamant that they hadn't, so they went to get a Technician "to tell me how to fit it"...the Technician knew his stuff and confirmed that I had got the wrong part after all. Hats off to them though because they arranged for the correct part to be couriered to them by 9.30 the next day...good customer service.
The only thing I couldn't do properly was to torque the 4 bolts that hold the crankshaft pulley on to 90 NM as Haynes suggests...I tightened them all up to 60NM and then tried increasing the torque to 90 but managed to twist my 6mm hardened steel hex bit before I reached 90NM. Does anyone know if this will cause me problems? Perhaps the correct torque setting for these bolts isn't 90 NM after all...can anyone advise please.
Cheers
