Hi ya all, i've been getting a clinking noise, like something is loose from the front whenever i drive over bumpy roads, the noise goes when braking, took it to local garage this morning & they said it's most proberbly the pads, has anyone else heard of this?

yeah i have something like this too. coming from my rear drivers side. it started after i had my tyres changed. my garage said it was probably a bearing. it goes if i apply foot or handbrake.
i'd be interested to know what it is too

Have a look at your front calipers to see if the spring retainer (anti- rattle) is still fitted.
This will be quite obvious if its missing as its normally fitted to the outside of the caliper facing the wheel.
Wifey used to have a metallic rattling noise coming from the front brakes on her car (Polo) and it was the anti-rattle clips that were broken which caused the pads to rattle around when the brakes were not on.
Hope this helps. :D

Hiya, just checked the callipers & the anti rattle clip is still there, i've read that there should be a little spring on the top of the calliper facing up towards the wheel arch in a gap now the gap is there but the spring isn't, it's the same on the other front calliper, should there or shouldn't there be a little spring there? been told it's the anti chatter clips:confused:

:aargh4::aargh4:Just been to the local garage who had a look at the cars braking system & they can't find anything wrong with them, they mentioned that it could be a wheel bearing but i'm just not sure, help please it's really driving me mad, it's like a metallic chirping sound whenver i go over bumps:aargh4::aargh4:

Does it happen when you put your steering on full lock?

Check ur cv boot and joint jack the car up and check for play in the bearing by rocking the wheel top to bottom but sometimes if the bearing is shot you dont get any play anyway so its a bit hit and miss this method and no there is not a second spring on top of the caliper.

Had the cv joints & boots changed a couple of months ago so everything should be alright there, had the steering on full lock & everything is fine, it's just when i go over certain bumps this metalic nocking noise apears, can't find anything obvious, just wondering that now the weather is a bit warmer things maybe drying out a bit, looks like i might have to go to the dealer but obviously don't want too. Just thinking that this is the second passat i've had & they do have problems with squeeky noises coming from all sorts of places but this noise i think should not be ignored.:aargh4: It must be now time to look at the suspension componants, everything seems as it should be so maybe something is loose.

Hi glen, did you get around to replacing that lower arm with the damaged ball joint rubber cover.
The only reason i am asking is that wear in these joints is unseen and if the grease has been lost out of the split rubber and dirt has got in then it will act like grinding paste and make the joint wear very quickly.
This will make a noise as the ball and cup will have worn a gap greater than the manufacturers tolerance allows.

I would recommend you buy Mr Haynes manual as this will give you all the info you need to replace the arm.
With regards to tools you will need a selection of combination spanners ranging from 13mm to 19mm, sockets of the same size and a ball joint splitter.
Time wise it should'nt take more than an hour or so providing it goes smoothly.
I can't give more info than this as i have never done this particular job on a passat before but i have done it on fords and vauxhalls. :biglaugh:
Have fun :D
