I was out tonight and when i first started the car the light flashed on the dash saying service needed, fair enough as its getting done this week anyway but then after about 30 miles i went to overtake a car and it was as if there was no boost, i could hear the turbo but the thing just did not want to go, i parked up and had a good check under the bonnet for air leaks etc and it was sound, drove home and give it some stick and its all fine again????? done another 100 or so miles since and its fine apart from the fan seems to be running all the time which is a bit scary even though there is plenty of water in the system and i'm not using aircon or anything, is this all to do with the service light or something as its really worring me now as its my taxi, oh and its the 1.8t.

Well i have done a good search and i have switched the service light off but still as soon as you switch the ignition on without even starting the car the fan starts up?

Dont know if this would help or not
I lost power etc, after going through all the usual thinking it was turbo. It was the Air filter, now a blocked air filter (Some so called mechanic had put a screwdriver through mine so not completely blocked) So blocked air filter temp could go up, so fan switches on, air flow checked at MAf so maybe low air flow, switches fan on ready. Just a thought. easy to check, unclip the air filter housing, secondary fan is also used as part of Aircon. Any error codes?

Thanks for that mate i will try that when the car cools down as i have just been to the airport and it did it again just seemed to go really flat as if there was no boost at all stopped at the airport and then drove home and it was fine again? not plugged it in for codes yet.

It is probably the coolant temp sensor, get the codes read.

Yes if the temp sensors are faulty the car will go into limp mode just to protect the engine.

This happened on my Subaru a couple of years ago.

Once changed all will be restored.

Its just a factory failsafe nothing to worry about.
