View Full Version : On cars without the fancy computer gizmo....

I don't think mine has the fancy computer gizmo....

When the petrol symbol comes up on your little screen is that the 'idiot' petrol light?

Or is it an early warning?

Mine seems to come on when i've barely hit under a 1/4 so not even quite on the red?

But then when i fill it up it goes quite a way over the full tank mark... so think my needle thing may be a little out?

That's the "idiot" light alright, telling that you have enough petrol to go for another 50 - 100km or so.

Lis,
It does sound like the gauge is reading a little high

Mine's fond of being condescening to me as well, a gentle
"oi, 'swear' head, we're gonna conk out in about 70 miles if you don't feed me" is basically what that light means! As for your needle, this may be of help:

I'll have another check tonight but i don't think my dash has one of those knobs that is talked about in that post?

I have 2 that come out of the perspex, one for clock, date, and to go through all the symbols and the other to clock the mileage. Which currently says i've done about 270miles and needle tells me i have just under 3/4's left which i think is incorrect. I think its my more likely and realistic that i have 1/2 tank left.

Hmm... that's a bit of a pain, it wouldn't be so bad if it was telling you it had less in it than you've actually got! Much easier to run out of fuel with what it's telling you.

Stick a full petrol can in your boot and run it till it stops, then you can see how accurate the guage is. Most cars show over the full mark if you really do brim it i.e. you've exceeded the tank and there's fuel in the feeding pipe
Hmm probably not really the most sensible option for me, its a diesel!

Its showing at just over 1/2 now having done 320 ish miles.

Is that not about right? I've never had a diesel, but from I've read, shouldn't you be getting 600-700 miles a tank? Or have I just been suckered by all the misers in "The Range Game"? :D

Not sure, but do know that when it gets to the point where it says just under 1/4 of a tank it will beep lots and show me the petrol symbol!!

Which is surely not right?!

Re the Range Game - not sure, will let you know how many miles its done when the petrol symbol appears !
Yeah but only if you drive it like a woman :burnout: outta here..

:p Yes I gathered hence my run-a-way. Mrs QV always gets a good MPG out of the Pasty, about 5mpg more than me according to the trip puter.
What is this 'Pasty' of which you speak?
You've lost me!

My driving slowly doesn't ever last long... my OH and his mates take the P out of me and call me lead foot :(
