PROBLEM NOW ISOLATED. PLEASE READ REPLIES BELOW

Hello all,

I have a slight concern with my car... I've owned it now for just over a year, and have covered approx 14,000 miles (motorway driving) and since I've owned it, I have never seen the temp go above 90 degrees. Even on the hottest day of the year, stuck in traffic for over an hour, it stayed at a constant 90.

Just now though, I had to pop to a clients house to drop off some documents, and while I was driving home the temperature needle stuck out like a sore thumb. It was one notch above 90 degrees, and during the drive back, it was slowly increasing. Now the journey itself, was a 10 minute drive there, and a 10minute drive back at 30mph. I was just wondering what the common causes of overheating are, considering for the past 14k, it's never gone anywhere near 100 degrees. The only thing I've done today is wash her.

Thanks to all that help :beerchug:

possibly water in the temp sensor/sender connections, thus giving false reading,or thermostat sticking although unusuall at such low mileage.

Ah, there's 122k on the clock, not 14k. That's just how much I've covered in the last year. Sorry for not making that clear :o

After careful viewing this morning, I noticed my coolant tank was empty! I filled it up with water, and have located a leak from one of the hoses to the left of the tank (not directly connected, just slightly underneath). Its a concern, because it wasn't a small drip, more like a steady stream. I tried as hard as i could to tighten on the loose hose, but to no avail. I reckon there's a split somewhere, and now I need a new one.

Does anyone know the round-about costs of a new hose including fitting? I've been lookin online, and have found none for less the £35, and I think that's a bit extreme for something so small... But if thats how expensive they are, then i'll just have to put up with it.

Thanks to all that help :)

Well I've done it. I've isolated the problem, and it's a bit more complicated then a split hose. I've added pictures for everyone to see... Quite a strange thing to happen...

First a picture of the engine for reference...

Secondly a quick zoom in (also for reference, so you can tell what part of the engine has the problem)

Thirdly, the problem itself. If it isnt clear, you're looking at the brown spot on the pipe. This is actually a hole!

And another one...

And FINALLY, what it looks like when the engine is running... Eeek!

Is this a common fault? I'm trying to look for the exact part but to no avail!
