I have a 52 reg 2.0 20V petrol (ALT engine) with just 38,000 miles and to me it uses too much oil. I topped it up to max 1000 miles ago and its back to min again. I know the old 115bhp 8v 2.0 petrol was known for this but not this engine?
Any thoughts much appreciated.
Cheers
Tim

Hi Tim - our 02reg 2.0litre 130bhp with 53k on the clock has been topped up with approx 3 litres of oil over the year, when we've averaged about 8000 miles. So its working out at about 2500 miles per litre.
Will be carrying out an oil change shortly as we do mainly commutes with the car. At the moment I put the oil consumption down to full synthetic and cold starts with shortish runs.
What type of driving do you do - which may contribute to the oil consumption.

Thanks for the reply mwvw (I recognise your name from your excellent cruise retrofit how to), the last 1000 miles were mainly short trips.
Any idea the amount of oil between full and empty?

Do a compression test on the engine to see if you have seized rings or leakey valves assuming you have checked for leaks

To go along with what Edie says , it could also be how the car was initally run in and how the rings bed down to the bores.
Did you have the car from new???
