Hi,
Apologies if this has already been answered, I did a quick search but couldn''t find anything.

Basically, I''ve just acquired a ''98 A4 avant, I have three keys, one with a little torch (which I''m assuming is the main key), a spare key (sans torch) and a plastic key. All of the keys unlock the car, but only the spare key starts it. Presumably because it''s the only one that has the correct code for the immobilizer.

So what I want to do is reprogram the main key, so that I''m able to start the car with it. I''ve read several things about unlocking the car with one key whilst another is in the ignition but these instructions seem to be talking about remote central locking, whereas my car has no remote. Just wondering if it''s possible to do the reprogramming my self.

BTW I have a 7 digit code on the key ring, don''t know if this is relevant.

Many Thanks,
Tom

If youve got the 7 digit code on the fob then you can program the keys yourself using vag com, its actually quite simple. If youve not got vag com,its deffinatly more cost effective buying it and a lead and programming the keys yourself tehan giving them to a ***********!Plus once you have the software, you can start reading diagnostic codes and fixiting errors if needs be, plus you can start tweaking your system a bit,its alot of fun adn VERY usefull!

As your keys use the older 'static code' transponder capsules, you have a few different ways of making the main key work again.

It is possible that the 7 digit code on the key tag may not be for the immobiliser.

The simplest solution may be to contact a good autolocksmith.

If the original transponder capsule in the key is undamaged, they can add it to the car for you (and give you your 4 digit immob code/SKC).

Alternatively they can clone an existing transponder capsule, or add a new 'unique' transponder for little cost.

I need a spare key made-up for a 2000 (W) Golf 1.4 E, so can I use a VAG-COM to programme a blank transponder chip?

All I have is the working orignial key (with coded transponder chip).

P.S. The car does not have central locking, so that's not an issue. However, the driver's door lock is a replacement and uses a seperate key to the ignition key. No idea if this makes a difference, but possible worth noting just in case.
