I have an A4 3.0 quattro sport 2001 and need to change the battery.
I have looked and cannot find any obvious clamping device -Can any one enlighten me please?

I am only guessing. If it is similar to my A4, in that the battery is situated in the engine bay under the front windsreen, I think that you will find that you have to use a 1/4 drive on a 13mm socket or thereabouts, on the end of an extension and undo the retaining bolt that lays between the front metal engine bay divider and the battery. If it is the same, the location of the bolt is not that obvious and you will need a torch/inspection lamp to see it.
The only reason that I know any of this, is because one of the engine bay water drain outlets is situated underneath the battey, on th A4. I tried to clear this drain from underneath the vehicle and suceeded in poking out the rubber gromit that surrounds the edge of the outlet hole.
When I saw the performance I was going to have replacing the gromit in to its former position, by having to remove the battery, I did not bother and I will wait until the battery needs replacing.
A bit long winded I know but if it is the same set up and there is a drain hole in that location, you would be advised to clear it out, as it will in no doubt, have leaves and the like blocking it and the battery removel would be a good opportunity to do this. Otherwise the water that gets down the vent holes near to your windscreen wipers, will never drain away and will just sit there. Good Luck and I bet you wished you had never asked or I had not replied.

Thank for the info - I had another good look today in bright sunshine and saw what you are talking about. However gap between battery and dividing wall too narow to get any tool down there and certainly not a 13mm socket.
What were Audi thinking of when they designed this set up ?
Thanks again for the info and the advice about clearing the drain hole. Like you I am totally put off by the difficulty of removing and installing a battery and have arranged for an Audi specialist to do the job for me. Cheers!

You are right, what were they thinking of. Having done a couple of things myself on the vehicle, since I have had it, including replacing the clutch, all that I have encountered has been fairly straightforward. You come up against something as simple as removing the battery and it appears to be major surgery:aargh4:time.

Job done now. :D
Mechanic took about 20 minutes and no problem for him. :o

On my A4 quattro 3.0 V6 2001 you need an allen key ( I didnt ask size) with 10" extension. Battery clamp is exactly where you said it was at battery base, in-between battery and engine divide.

Easy if you got the right tool and know how!:approve:
