Never heard of this one, what country is this? Is it an upgraded Fox?

The Gol is sold in Brazil, Argentina, China and some others and was original launched in the 70's. The original had a flat four air cooled up front and was rumoured to have been an early prototype for the Golf.
There are some really fascinating VW’s outside Europe such as the Parati, Saveiro, Sapcefox, Suran, Pointer and Sportvan (some of these are the same thing though, just different names for different markets plus some oddly named versions of the ones you know such as Magotan (Passat 3C) and Sagitar (Jetta 5). The other thing is some old VW’s are still made in China such as the Jetta 2, Bora, Golf 4, Passat 3B and even the old Passat 31 (Santana) and Passat 3A. Its all quite fascinating and I would love to import some of these wired old VW’s and put them in a showroom so people here could see them. I don’t know why but old cars still in production fascinate me, especially when they have been updated, you should see the old Jetta 2 now http://www.faw-volkswagen.com/en/model/mod_jetta.htm .

I didn't realise they sold "old" new cars ;) , and
These ones are what i googled.......
What really is interesting is that in South Africa, you can still buy a MK1 Golf !!!
Look here....
http://www.vw.co.za/models/citi/gallery/
Nice modern dash and ripe for a 1.8T or PD TDI conversion although if you look at the performace figures the 1.6 will do 0-60 in 9.7 seconds which isn't that slow.
The best bit is the price, as of today with todays exchange rates they go for R72,950 = £4,615 !!!!!
Factor this lot in (PD conversion would be my favourite option)
£4,4615 purchase
£2,500 to ship it to the UK
£1,000 taxes infort etc (probably optomistic)
£500 donor UK registered MK1 for log book etc
£ 4,000 for PD or 1.8T conversion
Now by my crude reckoning, you could have a spanking new FAST MK1 for about £12.5k which would eat R32's for breakfast !!
I want one...... shall we do a group buy on this ? ..... Crasher, how much to do the TDI / 1.8T conversion ? (assume 2k for salvaged tdi / 1.8T lump, loom, cluster and gearbox)
In fact, why don't VW do this, bet they would sell loads of MK1's ?

A chap approached me about a year ago through The Golf + (it happens but I try to discourage it ;)) about him commissioning a batch of 2 door R Line 1.8 Citi Golf’s (they were a limited run special edition) with the help of VW SA and with cooperation from VAG DE if they could find the two door side tooling but unfortunately nothing came of it. We estimated they were going to come out at £15K OTR after SVA work and import costs and that it just would not work, a shame really. Now they have made the Citi EU2 compliant it would actually cost significantly less to get one through the SVA as a significant proportion of the cost involved in getting one through is in fitting a catalyst and a piggy back controller to enable closed loop lambda control.

That maybe so for doing officially.
However if someone (like yourself with a MK1, which you DO moan about being a tad rusty now and then) were to import one and re-body it, transplanting the old running gear into the new shell, surely that would be SVA exempt.
I'm no expert on the SVA rules but assume that you can either re-body or re-engine a car without any problems? The next stage once that has been got through would be to hoof a TDI or 1.8T into it?
Surely it would be possible to do this as a one off bespoke project?
In fact, as long a anyone had a MK1 currently registered here, I'm sure VW SA would flog you a body shell if you asked them nicely. Shame about the two door tooling being lost though.
I also wonder if they have overcome the problem of the clutch cable ripping through the bulkhead. Guess they have as it would no doubt be a hydraulic clutch. I have vivid memories of that happing to my MK1 when I owned almost 20 years ago!

Big issue there is that the Citi shell is quite different to the last of the Golf 1. Things such as front panel, front wings, bulkhead, some floorpan details, exhaust hangers etc and the big problem, it has four doors.
The clutch cable has been completely re-engineered as has the crossover linkage for the brakes.

It looks a bit like a VW Pointer..
I saw loads of "different" VW's out in Mexico last year..
The cars are made as cheap as possible out in Brazil for the "cheap" market..
head over the boarder into Mexico where you can get a new "cheap" VW "Pointer" For £4995.00..
