WipeOut

Hi..
I have just PX'ed my 02 Passat 1.8T and got an 05 A4 2.0T.. I love just about everything about the Audi.. The only thing I am not happy with is the audio system..
So I am looking at how I can improve it without spending a fortune and while maintaining the stock look of the car..
From my digging it would appear that the standard SymphonyII (Non-Bose) has an amp hiding somewhere in the back of the car..
So the questions..
Are the signals going into the amp from the head unit line level?
Can I use the wiring loom that connects to the amp in the rear to provide signal and remote switching to an after market amp?
Where is the crossover? in the amp or HU?
Initially I think just a more powerful sub would make a difference so if I can use the existing wiring then it will make the whole job far easier because I wont have to pull so many cables through the car..
Thanks for any input..
