View Full Version : Changing the power steering ram rubber boot?
Howdy..
Anyone know if its a difficult job to change the boot rubber on the power steering ram? Mine has split into two parts. Or is it really that critical?
Its on a 1995 80 cabrio... so access is a little tight... but if its just a case of unbolting one end and sliding the old rubber off and a new one on, then maybe not so much trouble?
Thanks

changed the one on my 2.0e the other day and it was about as simple as it looks. loosen the two nuts holdong the end of the ram to the track rods then withdraw the bolts from under the ram these are threded into the end of the ram. it will now be possible to pull the track rods away from the ram you will now be replace the boot on the end closest to the ram's body is attached with a metal band which is a bit of a pig to remove due to limited space. on the end of the sanchion the boot is attached with a tight fitting plactic washer which will come off wwith some persistance. i used a universal gaiter (£2.50 from the local car spares shop) to be honest you'd be alot better off fitting a genuine audi one. hope this is some help

forgot to mention you might need a second pair of hands to help you refit the the track rods to the ram just to turn the sterring wheel to get the bolt holes to line up and make sure you dissconect the battery cause your gonna be working right next to it.
Much appreciated!!! Thanks.
