Hi everyone,
I'm new to this site and looking for some help!, once i get back from my honeymoon next month i am wanting to get rid of the Ford Mondeo i currently drive and get a 1.8T Sport, i've seen a few nice late model ones about at the right price and i'm just wondering what i need to look for when i go and see some? Are there any common faults, when does the cambelt etc need doing?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Also, what sort of mpg can i expect from one? I'm getting about 34mpg in my 2.0litre mondy, thats a 20mile motorway journey everyday and a bit of town driving.

You should get the same MPG mate, thats what I tend to get.
Is it a Passat your on about ?
60K or 4 years for Cam belt

thanks for that, well at least the mpg wont drop so thats good, i've seen 2 Audi A4 1.8T Sports, one was a 2000W, 55K immaculate for £3.5k.
Be nice to get a motor that will last as the Mondy is not exactly built to last!!

Just be sure it has been serviced regularily as they do have oil problems if left for too long on gammy oil. Ie make sure its done on a milage basis rather than the AVS method

Good advice, I have a 2001 Audi 1.8T sport and it's been nothing but trouble, must be one of those Friday afternoon cars....
The oil pick up got blocked and cost £450 to have fixed at a local garage, not Audi specialist, I have also had a wheel bearing and power steering pump replaced. the air con fan works when it wants too, and that's not often (due to the motor brushes or resistor pack I believe) the radio amp module has given up the ghost and the electric windows are tempramental. The engine ECU light has just come on as well...... I'm now looking for another model...

Hi Hammerman, i have had a prob with my 2002 1.8T this morning, to be honest it is a little overdue a service!! The low oil light warning keeps coming on even though the oil level is fine, had the RAC out just to be safe, he plugged it in and said there was nothing wrong, could it possibly have the same 'pick up' problem that you mentioned? if so how do i check it?

I gotta say, I have a 1.8T quattro, and i don't reckon you have a chance in hell of getting 34mpg from it!
More like 24mpg! I do about 800-1000 miles a week, and although i do drive hard, i struggle to keep the average up to 24 if any town driving involved (i do use the revs tho..)

Perhaps the fact vthat it is quattro (4WD) increases the consumption. I would assume it does. My 2WD 1.8T sport gives around 31 to 33MPG local runs and nearer 40 on longer runs. Driving styles can also affect the MPG so it is a difficult figure to quantify.

I have the 163 T Sport model 2001 on an 51 plate and since I have had it I have nothing but trouble and expense, one thing after another. Apparently between 80 & 100k miles the oil pump failing is a common problem, and at my local garage cost me just under £300, and a few months later the pressure and level indicators failed which meant more money. The MAF sensor has failed twice, I have had 3 of the 4 coil packs give up the go (another £75 there) and another common problem is that there is a clunking sound from what I have been told is either the bushes or a "ball joint" which is again a common problem. As much as I love my A4 I wish I had never bought it, it's cost me more then I bargained for!

I can't belive you have all had so many problems with your 1.8T's! I've had a 2000 model for about a year now and had no problem's other than the cup holder getting stuck in!(any ideas on how to remove?!) Im hoping to get mine re-mapped at MRC soon, has any one on hear had any dealings with these chaps? Just bite the bullet and buy one you'll love it!

has everone got it in for 1.8t engines?
most oil pressure /warning light are caused by not changing the oil ever 5-6 thousand miles with good Fully Synthetic oil,
the oil pumps fails because the oil hasnt been changed and cant cope pumping sludge around.
mpg quattro,s milage is um well lets just say its not good , the fwd are different and all depends on the driver. my other half can get 42ish on a long run where as im lucky to see 25.
if you get one with aircon /climate check that the second fan comes on when the aircon is on if it doesnt get big hammer and an extention bar and hit it, loads are seized as people dont us the aircon and they just seize up.
we all know coilpacks arnt the best but £100 for 4 isnt that bad when you look at the price of quality H/T leads
another fault is the central locking. however its not as expensive to fix as people think. if it does go wrong.
ive been runing 1.8t engines for 10 years and think there great, and on to my 3rd a4 (first avant) but 8th 1.8t vag car, and while they still make 1.8t audi's i'll drive them.
ps extra power is only a remap away :biglaugh:

I'm also new on here:Blush:
Just got rid of my mondeo and bought a 1996 for £850 mint condition, full service history etc... Bought it off of an old guy who was just about to retire. Oils been changed every 5K.. its got 144k. Still feels like a new car  and pulls hard  loads quicker than my mondeo :biglaugh:
Anyone know how many miles they will do? I've been told the clutch, turbo and exhaust are still original
Best thing I ever did swapping

My 1.8T has done 175K all original clutch, turbo etc, put in new steering rack 3 yrs ago and front wheel bearings, all ally front suspension arms replaced with febi ones, oil changed every 5K and let engine tick over for a couple of minutes after a run. All in all a good car!
