Hi guys,
Currently have an 2.0 Golf Mkiv & looking to buy a 1.8t, but i'm wondering if anyone can help with the specs of a 1.8t remapped to 190bhp with a Revvo remap.
How would it compare to something like a hothatch, Civic R, Clio Sport, Focus RS etc etc?
Thanks in advance.:beerchug:

All the cars you list have roughly the same power, Clio 192 or 197bhp, Civic 198bhp, Focus 212bhp, but the real performance and tunability comes from the turbo cars. The Focus, Golf (chipped to 190bhp) and Audi's (TT or S3) would feel quicker from the boost of the turbo rather than the Clio and Civic that produces the power (on the red line!) but with out the torque. With the turbo cars you get a more usable power without having to ring its neck!
The 1.8T is very tunable and reliable engine. In fact it is still used in the Polo GTi produced today.

I thought the Civic V-tec kicked in at 3500 revs to get the boost?

No more like 6000rpm, and revs out at 8000rpm.... Who wants to drive around like that every time you want some power?!

Yeh does seem pointless. You can get a chip so you can have the Vtec kick in when you like instead, but not sure how happy I'd be accelerating to 40 and suddenly find my car going 60 straight into a tree...

I think you have control over it! It won't do anything you don't ask it too, but I would have a Turbo car anyday. In a Civic you would up and down the box all the time as there just isn't much torque, with the Turbo Golf, especially a chipped one the torque will be there pretty much in what ever gear your in giving you a more relaxing drive.
The other aspect is Turbo cars are generally good on fuel if you lay off the boost.

I'm currently debating wether to sell my 1.6 and get a 1.8T Golf or spend an extra £2k and get the Type-R.
Looking on eBay and AutoTrader there seems to be massive differences in the classified prices of both of them, sometimes you find a 1.8T for 6k with 50k miles and then the same model, same condition for the same price but with 100k+ miles!

I would suggest you test drive both, and make your mind up that way. The build quality of the Honda internally isn't up to the standard of the Mk4 Golf though mechanicly it is.
I own the 180bhp Golf and it is brilliant. Pulls in all gears and gives me upto 40mpg on a run. For me the Civic would start to grate on me after a while of having to rant the thing to get the power out of it but that personally preferance.

Thanks fellas, great help.
I was thinking of getting a Jap car like an FTO or MR2 but at heart i want a Golf, again especially as i know the parts are easy to get hold of & they#re much easier to work on.:p
As you say, they're brilliant cars & very reliable, i also think that for the age & price they are the nicest looking, inside & out then the other similar cars for the age & price.
The 2.0 is a little to much insurance for what it is, i read that it's not even a true GTI, the specs prove this as it's only an 8v & puts out a whopping 115bhp where the non turbo 1.8 puts out 125bhp..
Still a cracking car for everything other then speed.

It's a much better engine, turbo'd and 16valves against the 2.0 8valve lump.
The 1.8T's are also highly tunable, so you should be able to get some pretty decenty mods under the bonnet if that's your preference!
The anniversary version is 180bhp but costs a couple grand more.

Indeed, i'll probably stick with the remap to start with as i can see it costing £££. :)
Is £3000 the average price for a 1.8t as i remember when i was looking for my 2.0 i saw quite a few for that price.
Noway am i getting another black car tho, so hard to clean lol. I like a dark green or red.

Sadly I bought a black Golf, just had to have a black one, shows scratches like pimples on a supermodel :(
£3k is going to be very high mileage, 6k will get you about 50k miles if you're lucky and nice bodywork. But it's a buyers market for Mk 4s now their big brother is around and the Mk 6 is on its way in Autumn. If you could wait till then you're pound will go alot futher on a Mk 4.

Yup, got loads of stone chips on the front which show up really bad.
Well i'm looking to buy around October/November time so hopefully will find a good deal on one. £3.5k is probably the most i can spend.

Golfs are renowned for reliability so you shouldn't be too nervous of 90k - 100k miles, just make sure you get someone to check the car if you're not too sure about things.
I'm trying to decide between a 1.8 T and a 2.0 Civic Type R...almost two thousand pounds more expensive for a civic doing the same miles as a Golf.
Well good luck buying :beerchug:

Stay vag.
I can remap a 150 1.8t golf up to 197bhp, 210nm to 270nm on the torque.
Pulls like a train. Choo choo!!! :biglaugh:
Or wot bout the leon cupra. You can pick em up very reasonably. Theres 2 in the trader this week.
Theyre 180 std with 235nm. I can get em to 215bhp with 300nm torque.
They go well too!!:biglaugh:.
Plus if your not boosting all the time you can see an increase of up to 15% on your fuel economy.
Its all about the delivery!! :beerchug:

Yup, the 1.8t is mint for the price and chip-ability. Personally, I've left it as is as it fits my purpose. But yeah, can highly recommend the 1.8t - especially the 180bhp
