View Full Version : Question On board computer retrofit?

WipeOut

Hi,

Just got my A4 2.0TFSI on Friday, its back at the dealer at the moment because it blew a coil pack on Saturday but I guess thats life..

Anyway, my car doesn't have the on board computer option that gives the MPG and other information..
Can this be easily fitted (I know I will need the stalk with the buttons to control it)??
Other than the stalk what would need to be bought or done to make it work?
Would it be very costly?

Thanks..

Sounds like you have a low line dash,if so i think you will need a highline dash and steering column electrics plus the (mfa) switch and vag com 704 to code it all or try to code the steering column electrics for mfd and if the screen changes then its a switch .If you have access to etka then you can work the part numbers out for the software compatability but a quick change to the code will tell you alot

Hi Wipeout,

I've just added the DIS and Cruise to my A4 and you should be able to add the DIS with only the new Wiper stalk and a recode in Vag-Com.
The SCSM (Steering Control System Module) would only need changed if you wanted to add Cruise control at the same time. Do you have Cruise or a Multi Function Steering Wheel?
Basically the parts you would need would be the wiper stalk, a new bolt for the steering wheel and a service wire to connect the washer fluid level sensor to ground to stop it constantly telling you you are out of screenwash.

Took me about an hour and a half to do the install, so should be a bit less for you as you don't need to remove the SCSM.
If you can get access to Vag-Com do a scan of module 16 - Steering and let me know thepart number of your SCSM, it will be 8E0 953 549 x, the x is the important part, it should be either F, N, S, P or R.

If you have any more questions just ask!!

Cheers

Hi,

Yeah drop me a PM if you need anything!!
The stalk from the dealers is about £75. Vagparts.co.uk is a bit cheaper, but I got mines from eBay. eBay.de sometimes has them quite cheap, try putting in "audi a4 fis" to eBay.de and see if it brings anything up.

I'm in the middle of a write up for the DIS and cruise update but my cars in the dealers just now too so I can't get it finished just now!

i'd be interested in any pics/writeups of this being done if you or anyone else has managed to document it?

I've always contemplated doing this, but never really had the time/inclination

Parts required for my 2004 a4 1.9 tdi lowline electrics
1 steering column electrics control unit for onboard computer doesnt need to be changed from low 8E0 953 549 S but im retro fitting cruise as well so i fitted 8E0 953 549 N.
There is no pin 5 for cruise for s but there is for n

Switch for on board computer part number U4E0 953 503 C4 PK £ 54

Switch for cruise U4E0 953 503 4P K £ 19

Lower couling trim for cruise U8E0 953 512 P6 PS

EXTRA wire for dash multi pin (blue connector pin 1) 000 979 020

Ill cover both cruise and mfi switch for b6 in this description,it took me 1 hour to fully complete but i had already worked my codes out and wiring diagram.

Scan your car with vag com before any work and record all your codings.
Make sure the clutch switch is working in engine ecu measured value blocks as cruise wont operate if the switch isnt working.

Disconnect the battery and destatisfy your self before removing the drivers air bag.

Remove the two torx screws for the airbag and disconnect the airbag.

Place the airbag face upon the floor away from yourself.

Remove the 12mm multi spline for the steering wheel and mark the position of the steering wheel so you dont have to realign the wheel.

Remove the steering wheel and remove the steering couling Two small torx and one small 4 mm allen key plus 2mm allen key for the height adjuster arm.

Remove the steering angle sensor

Ok you should now see this2962

You will see the 4 black headed torx screws securing the switch packs to the steering column electrics.

If your only doing the mfs then just swap the switch.

If your doing both then unscrew all 4 torx and fit the new steering column electrics control unit and fit the cruise switch as well and secure.

Ok now you should be here
Fit the new couling part number U8e0 953 512 p6 ps.(only for cruise)
You should look like this 2963

Remove the dash insert and disconnect the multi connectors.
You need the blue connection.
Remove the inner multi pin from the blue outer connection2964 2976
Locate pin 1 and there wont be a wire there.
Fit additional wire into the terminal (wire part number 000 979 020 )and run the wire to the earth point on the bulk head behind the dash (10mm nut)
Fit a eye terminal and secure at this earth point.
Insulate your wiring with cloth tape or insulation tape if your a cheap skate and reassemble the connection.2966 2967
Re assemble and get ready for coding the lot up.

2970
This image is the washer bottle level warning that will stay on if you dont wire into pin 1

Ok reconnect the battery and connect vag com.
Not all codes and adaptions may be relevant for your vehicles so work your own out.
Abs needs recoding as the steering angle senders been off so off to ross tech site for you .
http://www.ross-tech.com/vag-com/download/label-files/8E0-614-517.lbl
sorted that then lets go on.
Now the steering column needs setting up for cruise and mfs.
http://wiki.ross-tech.com/index.php/Cruise_Control_Retrofitting_%288E%29
Ok sorted that lets sort the dash display for on board display.
Goto 17 dash and goto adaption channel 19 and use the help bloon to determine your code.
Mine required to be set to 31010
Ok you should now have onboard display and try your button out.
all done rescan and erase fault memory and test your cruise out.
The green icon will come on the top of the dash when cruise is active

Don't know if this applies for the B6 versions but works on my B7. There are some additional settings for Channel 19 of the cluster that add a menu option and allow you to further customise the DIS modes a little. I have options to display avg speed, avg fuel consumption, driving time, distance to empty, trip computer, instantaneous fuel consumption. Can also change units to be km & litres or miles, US or UK gallons. Lines 14-18 are the codes that affect this.
