Anyone have any idea what these sounds and/or are they normal?
I have a Mk 4 golf GT-TDi 130. 03.
- Constant ticking noise when i switch on the ignition. Like a clock ticking only after about 3 ticks it gives 2 in quicker succession and then starts over again. Coming from the passanger side of the car. Seems to be around the glove compartment area.
- Also a kind of 'fluid' sound when the ignition is on. As if there is liquid being pumped around.
Maybe this is normal but would rather know for definate to put my mind at rest. Cheers!!

Air con? My 306 used to have a noisy system that made similar noises.

Is this normal or is the air-con low?

I think the fluid sound your hearing is the fuel purging thru the pipes/filter mine and my bro's gt tdi 130's do exactly the same.
Not sure about your ticky prob tho.

The fluid noise sounds like the fuel pump starting up. My Bora has always made this noise when I turn the ignition on, and it's never caused a problem.
Do you have Climate Control? As a suggestion I'm wondering if the ticking is the motorised flap on the climate control system which sits somewhere underneath the pollen filter (behind the glove box). I have had this as a problem in the past, and it needed a new motor. Ofcourse, if you ain't got climate control, I won't be this! :-)

I get the ticking on my 150. No idea what it is. Its nothing to do with the climate control though as it does it with the climate off.

i think that noise it the fuel return pump, had it look at by garage, as i did not know what is is, does it go away when the engine has warmed up?

Nice to hear that the gushing sound is kinda harmless. Its been making this noise since i got the car and have put an extra 15000 on the clock and still no problems. I mean, everything wors fine. Its just that i've never heard of anything like this in all the other cars i've owned. Havent checked if it does it when warmed up. I'll check tho.

Could still be climate control, as my Bora used to make the ticking noise even if the Climate Control was turned off.
On cars equipped with climate control...if you take the cabin filter out, underneath it you will see a flap being operated by a motor, if this flap keeps moving around uncommanded, then this will most likely be the cause of the ticking.

agree its some flap for climate control, had the same issue last year and had it replaced, cost about £150, but it just started making a similar type of noise again. So will be going back to VW and getting them to sort it out as should still have a warrenty on the repair
