just a word to say hello to everyone. picking up my 1997 a4 tdi 2moro. always loved audi's and have owned a couple of older 80's and a 90 quattro. But that was about six yrs ago so looking forward to being behind the wheel of a proper car again..lol. i've just bought a 2 owner immaculate condition a4 with full audi history for a knockdown price because its got a couple of niggling faults. I would appreciate a little advice regarding diagnostic equipment for the tdi, i'v found a diagnostic interface that plugs into a pc but not sure if its correct for the car, its described as
VAG-COM USB KKL Dual Line OBD Diagnostic Interface.
would really appreciate your knowledge as to whether this is the correct lead and hope that i will be able to return the favour as i become more familiar with the modern audi's

that should be the correct interface for a 97 motor, the later style come in in 2001 ish.
Ross-tech site has a chart, but 1997 is definatly KKL

cheers lonky, lead will be ordered asap. A mate plugged the car into his snapon diagnostics yesterday and the fault shown was a fault in the control valve for the egr although it registered as a intermittent fault so cleared codes and car seems fine at mo but ordered a new valve to be on the safe side..

not uncommon fault. They tend to soot up over time and then wedge open or closed.
Tends to cause the car to smoke a bit more, and run lumpy at tickover.
Short term solution is to clean, but in reality best to replace

hi mate just thought i'd clarify in case anyone else suffers the same prob its not the actual egr valve thats dodgy its the electronic/vacuum type valve that operates the egr valve. I think someone has tried to rectify this prob before but misunderstood the diagnosis because the egr valve itself is brand new. Thanks for advice regarding cable it arrived this morning so i'll plug it in and give it a whirl on monday..

If you havent gone for a genuine Ross-Tech cable, your functionality with Vag-Com will be very limited.
Allways best to get a genuine cable from Ross-tech.com of Derek at ilexa.co.uk
