Hi,

I have a 2001 Golf 1.9 TDI. I only have it a few months and had to replace the sump about two months ago after hitting a bump and not getting a soft landing. OIL everywhere!! I got it replaced but their was a bit of a hole in my pocket after it $$$$.

Anyways driving down the road today came across a bump and dident slow down and of course when we touched down there was the loudest bang around. Another sump bites the dust, this is the second f**king sump ive had to replace in two months and I anit happy about it.

Anyways a mate of mine said he has seen lods of golfs with this problem of the sump scraping and hitting when going over bumps at high speed and said there are specialist shocks the can be got for the front to prevent this.

I have looked into it and havent found any mention about it on any websites so I am posting here to see has anybody heard of these specialist shocks and where can I get them and do they fix the sump problem

It happens but not that often, unless you are just unlucky. Is the car lowered?

It's quite a well known problem, I don't know of any stiffer shocks but the sump pan cover which is plastic is always getting torn off of my wife's golf, 1999 mk4 1.9 tdi, the clearance is just 150mm but you must be going over a ramp pretty quickly in order to bottom out your sump, never done that but have torn off three sump guards at £100 each!
Reckon your cheapest option is to slow down when you go over ramps after all that is what they're there for!

On standard cars it is most common on the 4 Motion as they sit lower and the sump is also closer to the ground. I have replaced more 4M sumps than I can remember.

would fitting bigger wheels help?

If you fit bigger wheels and the overall tyre diameter is larger (so raising the car), the rolling radius will then be incorrect which will alter the gearing and make the speedo under read
