I have a 2001 Golf TDI 130, with 90k on the clock. I have a problem with the turbo cutting out, which becomes worse in the hot weather. By turning the ignition off and on momentarily all is well and the car runs fine until the next time it happens. This could be after a few miles or a few thousand miles it is very unpredictable. Initially my VW garage said it was a badly adjusted brake light switch as when activated this cuts off the turbo boost. This was adjusted and all was well for many thousands of miles. However it has started happening again and the VW garage now said the turbo has failed! Can anyone suggest what may be at fault if it is not the turbo?

Your suffering what is known as limp mode.

What happens is the ECU calls for a certain amount of boost, the turbo cannot supply it and as a precaution the ECU puts itself into "limp" mode i.e. does not call for boost as a saftey feature to prevent possible engine damage.

Do a search on here for "limp mode" for loads of information as to the causes and remedies.
