Hi,

When starting my golf ive noticed a weezing sound coming from the engine. It sounds even worse when you drive it for a while. AT first I thought it was just when it was cold but started after work today and it was even worse. Someone has mentioned this could be due to using the standard unleaded rather than the high octane stuff. I asked at the dealership and they said it only made a difference to mpg. Can anyone confirm this?

Also since I purchased the car its had 2 gear boxes and a clutch under warranty but im still having problems with the gears being crunchy and occasionally stopping me from getting it in gear at all. Is there anything else that could be causing this problem? I find it strange that after 2 gear boxes and a new clutch that im still having these problems. The gears also seem to be worse when travelling at speed/high revs.:zx11:

Any help appreciated

Thanks

Hi

I have the same vehicle as you on an '04 plate, I too have had a new gearbox and clutch under warranty as something went seriously wrong with my synch mesh on the motorway!

After it happened I had a bit of a research on the net and found that a lot of drivers with 1st generation Golfs had clunky/crunchy gearboxes, especially changing from first to second. This usually occured when the car was cold and related to the gearbox oil not properly circulating until the car had warmed up. One solution was to change the gearbox oil to synthetic as it seemed to circulate better, however some owners added an oil additive known as "Slick 50" which compromised the oil's protection of the gearbox and lead to premature failure.

Even with my new gearbox and clutch, gear changes can be slightly clunky within the first 10mins of driving, I've had the new gearbox in just over 6 months and it's remained the same. It never prevents me from engaging or disengaging gears though, just not as smooth as I'd like sometimes.

As for the engine noise I couldn't advise you really other than it's my understanding that the use of "Super Unleaded" only improves MPG and and slightly enhances performance.

I'm no mechanic, so please don't take what I'm saying as gospel, just wanted to share a bit of my research with you. Hope you find a solution to your problem soon.

regards

B

Hi Benje,

thanks for your reply it seems im not the only person having these problems as ive read a few other forums and there seems quite alot of the fsi models having gear box problems. I had exactly the same sychro failure as you and like you say it does affect 1st and second the most. the only gears that feel fine in mine are 5 and 6 which I believe are housed seperatly. Im just a bit concerned its gona go again after the wrranty is up in august.

Think I might give the super unleaded a try and see if it makes any difference.
