Audi A3 petrol sounds like a diesel

Hi can any one give me a bit of advice? have an Audi A3 fsi sportback 1.6 petrol (38k mile) and lately when you start the engine it makes a noise like a diesel for about 30 seconds then it stops. My car is currently at a dealership as they are trying to find out the problem. (it has been there a week so far) also the mile per gallon goes mad when it is started up rising fast and dropping like a stone for the 1st few hundred yards then it settles out. I though this might be the same problem as i had on my golf gti the lamda probe but they don't seem to think so. does any one have an ideas, am getting sick now :aargh4: have been told it might be also be the oil pump? anyone got any ideas??? thanks :1zhelp:
