View Full Version : The range game
Right then,
(Many thanks to Erl off UKPassats for the piccy she took at the South East meet last weekend for me)
The aim of the game is to post up your maximum tank range.
You can do this at any point on a tank full of fuel by adding the 'miles remaining' plus 'miles driven.
Here is a quite extraordinary effort by me as a result of filling up and driving like an old granny for the 68 miles shown on the odo. It was actually over 800 milles at one point (as shown MFD) but the last five or six miles to the meet was very hilly which kills mpg and subsequently the range.
Anyway;
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v602/colin__/range.jpg
My range is 755 + 68 = 823 miles !!!
Beat that !! (photographic evidence required!)
The car is a 2002 Passat Estate TDI (130) Engine code AWX
Just to add,
Despite all the woes and problems you read about on here with this and that going wrong with our cars.
These MPG / Range figures really do show and remind us how very, very good these cars are !

Do you need an on-board computer for this? I've only got the standard DIS. Or is there a special series of buttons I have to press?
Paul
I would assume your A6 would have the same or a very similar cluster to my Passat ?
The answer is in the display. Does yours have the computer readout where the clock is on mine instead ?

It has a clock just like yours, only with red lighting like the instrument cluster. It normally only tells me the temperature outside.

Standby....... I regularly see over 900 miles on my T5........80 litre tank though.
Most I've had out of it, 720, and 725 out of my A6 1.9tdi 130 avant!
Ok....
I'm currently on course to smash my previous record !!

Not the best photos but;
880 range plus 143 miles driven (this morning) equals a total tank range of 1,023 miles !!!!!
This was achieved immediately after filling it up grannying behind lorries on the M25 and back again with the cruise on.
It did, on the outward leg and again on the inward leg go about 30 higher on the total range but a bit of stop start driving brought it down a bit.
Again, the car is a bog standard tuning wise 2002 TDI 130hp AWX engined 5 speed Passat Estate. It does however haul along my 18 stone bulk plus about 2 stones worth of ICE.
Not bad for an old banger !

hmm, this should be titled "the diesel owners dahboard pictures" thread lol. i havent got a hope in hell of getting a worthy picture up here (unless i fiddle with vagcom as A8 tech has said...).
It really does suprise me.
I thought Audi's were posh and would have more kit in them than the humble VW's.
Do you not have buttons on the end of your wiper stalk to cycle through the computer functions? Older VW's instead of the red central display had the computer readout where the clock is, you still cycled through the functions with the wiper stalk buttons though.

Unfortunately, I will never be any good at this game because my AWX A6 doesn't have an on-board computer and it doesn't have the high line dash so I can't fit it either without spending thousands... :sadwavey:
Mind you, it's good to see another AWX going strong at high mileage, gives me hope !

I really am stunned that your car does not have this.
I've never paid that much attension to Audi's but do know they don't have as much kit as standard as the same VW. Mate of mine had a fairly flash A4 a few years ago, it was the biz but didn't even have rear leccy windows !
I suppose they want to get you to dig into the options list when buying new.
As for the AWX (fingers crossed) sweet as a nut, it normally gets thrashed, everywhere which I think helps, honestly.
Also want to bump this thread up.
There must be other saddos on here who could join in.

My A4 1.9 TDi 100 usually does about 750 - 775 out of a tank (without taking it right down). I've had close to 800 in the past. The last week I've been trying to cruise at 60-65 to see if can get 850 out of a tank. I may try and spend a couple of weeks doing 55 to see what I'll get out of that.

My brother had a mk2 Golf GTi that was like that. My coupe hasn't got a computer, other than the diagnostic jobby that's always beeping at me for not having enough screenwash etc! (it did tell me one of my brake callipers was caput though, so I'll not slate it!)

Now THAT sounds like a good game.
Now THAT sounds like a good game.
Quite right.
This could work both ways.
TDI's can show off their frugality, bonus points for most miles per tank.
Petrols can show off their thirst, bonus points for least miles per tank.
We are ALL winners that way. :grouphug: all at the same time.

1200?! thats roughly the same weight as my passat right?
when mine was 110, it did 630-640 per tank from brim to light, now its 143 ish, it did 590 on last tank, basically cos i give it loads in the first week :aargh4: but i would have thought the lack of power pulling the same weight would make it worse on fuel? i wouldnt have mine standard for anything in the world!!
The point of the game and for everyones sanity (no body could possibly drive slow enough over a whole tank unless they are (a) a granny or (b) a cabby, 5th gear at 28mph anyone? or (c) a nutter).
Reason being, I always start off with good intentions and get a massive range showing on the computer but sadly it wears off and I revert back to normal hooning mode.
I keep a very detailed spreadsheet of (swear) things fuel and miles and here are a few stats;
Worse overall range on a tank (we are talking about filling up PLUS what is left in the tank) = 478 miles , on this tank full, I filled up at 414 miles = pretty poor.
Best range again at the end of a tank full = 710, filled up at 653 miles = average.

My Audi is kitted up quite well, generally. But the clown who bought it first paid for the standard SE Sport pack. So it got sports black leather seats with electric lumbar support etc.
But there isn't a single expensive option that has been shelled out for. It only had the single in-dash CD, not a full Bose system, no DIS, no cruise control, no multi-function steering wheel, no Sat nav or Symphony sound unit. No sunroof either ! :zx11:
Mine'll do just about do 20mph in 5th, it'd still lose though! :D

at tick over when the dpf is not regenerating the mpg is 200, when decelerating the mpg is infinite as the fuel is cut off.

I have a Golf MkV which has a smaller tank, but often get towards the 600 miles mark. If you take into account that the Passat has a larger fuel tank by at least 15l, and factor that up by my current average mpg of 48, then I would be getting approx 760 miles on a Passat size tank. This is all without me driving like Miss Daisy.
Well, I've just filled up from the tankfull in the quoted post below...
Laughably I only got 591 miles out of that tank full ! :p
Anyway a few stats on that tank full;
Total miles = 591
Litres filled (vented) = 64.44
Litres Remaining = 2.56
Range remaining before it ran out completely = 614 miles
Range remaining = 23 miles.
Trip computer average MPG = 44.9
Calculated MPG (vented brim to vented brim) = 41.69
Miles per litre (calculated) = 9.17
And for those who operate in miles per tenner = 72.81 (£1.26/ltr)
Just goes to show how much a heavy right foot influences what a TDI can do. I grew bored shortly after filling up and posting below. Normal driving resumed and that was the result.

I don't understand how you get that much out of a tank!
I've got the same engine as you, in an A6, and get 600 and a bit to a tank full. It won't do 700 thats for sure. I do run with the CC on constantly though, and it does a 50-50 mix of motorway and town driving.

Paul,
Note how it never ever gets to the range estimated when the tank is full. I get bored and have to go quicker. I average anywhere between 450 and 550 per tank full in real life.
To get the range up that high at the start of a tank means driving like a saint for 50 odd miles before the fill up. Or you can do a go-slow after you have filled.
When I say go-slow / like I saint, I mean tuckiing in with the HGVs in lane one at about 50 to 57mph on a flat motorway or duel carriageway. I also don't use the cruise as the acceleration is to aggresive, you can belive it or not drive more economically without it but it takes a fair bit of concentration.
Edit.. And I never ever turn the climate / aircon off either :p

I get in, give it a beating every week or two which makes it more economical in the long term IMO. Mostly because I clear all the soot out of the exhaust... its like a dirty bomb going off! :D

vent the tank? do explain?
i always fill to the brim, always getting 65mpg on way home, an hour for 30 miles, always getting 55mpg on way to work, 40 minutes for reverse journey slightly different route, overtaking at every safe point, keeping to the speed limit of course, not using much throttle till 3rd or 4th gear, hardly ever feel the need to floor it completely, never need to? :biglaugh:

Venting.
If you look inside the filler neck when the cap is off, on the left hand side you will see a small black plastic button / protrusion.
If you press this in with the fuel nozzel you can fill up to the brim, literally. If you don't the nozzle clicks off with the fuel at a lower level in the tank.
Simply, it allows you to fill up the filler pipe right up to where the fuel cap is.
When you fill up, do it as normal until it clicks off, then withdraw the nozzel partially so you press the button in and hey presto you can get another 5 to 6 litres of fuel in.
It takes a fair bit of time to get it completely full as you have to go really slow to avoid spillage and to be quite honest, I don't bother any more.
Do a google for "TDI venting" or even "Ventectomy", a ventectomy is a mod where you permanently bypass the standard cut off. Not a good idea in my mind.
Note that this can only be on diesels.
Stuey,
If you have an AFN'd Passat, I reckon they will be the king at the range game.
Get some pics up of your range. I reckon you could see past the 1,000 mile barrier non vented.
Mine above was done with a vented tank full.

I've got a tdi 130 sport estate and there must be something wrong with it as I have never got any more than 550 miles out of a tank and that was all motorway but currently i'm lucky to get 140 miles out of £20!

550 sounds quite normal if not good. To get the really high range readings you need to drive like a HGV !
I can get the initial range but soon tire of going so slow and so carefully.
Two examples here from the new luxo wafting barge A6 Avant I'm now wafting around in.....
After the first 100 miles or so it was showing a range of 146 driven plus 605 indicated range = 751 miles total.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v602/colin__/Image018.jpg
And earlier today 335 driven plus 405 indicated = 740
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v602/colin__/Image028.jpg
I'm quite chuffed with this as the 1st tank full. I've really NOT been trying that hard either. I reckon I can get it over 1,000 !!!!
Not bad for a ma-hoosive luxo barge is it ?

You probably will get a 1,000 reading. It seems very good on the old diesel!
I'm still gutted I can't participate in this thread... Good old Col got the one with a flippin' mpg computer!
And I didn't! :aargh4:

a full tank on mine usually comes up with 590miles. I've never actually got that many miles out of it though. Usually around the 500 mark. The lowest I've gone is down to 20 miles left. I darent go much lower, even though there is probably loads left. I dont even know how big the tank is
Getting nearer the 1,000 barrier in the A6 Avant.
Took this snap just now;
745 indicated range plus 146 driven on this tank equals a total range of 906 miles !!
I reckon when it gets warmer and ideal conditions I'll break the 1,000 barrier in it.
Astonishing results for such a big car !!

how the hell are you getting that? I'll have to take piccies of the A4 when I get chance.
I'm getting around 500 miles forecasted from my tank. To be fair, a lot of my journies are town, stop-start driving so that won't help.
Initial findings on the latest stint to the trafford centre and back saw nearly 50mpg though.
Edit - piccie added

There is a real knack to getting it that high. Drive in with the HGV's to get the range as high as possible on what remains in the tank, then fill up and continue in at HGV speed for as long as you can bear it !!!
Which in my case is not long, I've been booting it about since I took that last piccy and the total range on the tank drive + indicated is looking like it will come in at about 600miles for the tank.
Normally in my old Passat which had the same engine as the Passat I'd expect to see anywhere between 450 and 550 per tank in real world driving.
This is NOT real life and anyone who actually can get that range at the end of a tank must be mad.
Hence me calling it the range game, as a game it is !!
P.S. I bet you could get more in your smaller / lighter A4 !

Right then, after a stewards enquiry that lasted all but 0.5 of a second, it is in fact only a lowly 500 !!!

Can us petrol heads join in here? Or should I start a new thread.
I filled up with petrol in Folkestone and after driving very steadily up the M20, recorded this:
http://img.geocaching.com/cache/log/display/7d2f685f-82aa-46ee-845e-24888d2d322f.jpg
690 range + 33 driven = 723 miles
That's my 2.4 A6 Avant. I was going downhill at the time!
I've now just about finished that tank of petrol and it's come out at around 430 miles.
Apologies for the image quality, but the phone had a state of the art camera when it was new - that was a long time ago!

I was driving very gingerly, behind a lorry, just to see how high it would go. In normal driving, the range says about 450 miles, which works out to 28mpg, which isn't too bad for a petrol.

recently got 520miles out my A4 on mostly motorways at ~65mph. taught myself a whole new lesson in self discipline in the process!!!
Normally I fill up get massive range in the first hundred miles or so, then get bored and hoon it as normal getting an average of 550 per tank.
This time I've done 277 with 570 indicated as left giving a 847 mile total range.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v602/colin__/A6/Image048.jpg
The target is to get over 700 before actually filling up this time.
Also this isn't as good as my previous record range but for good reason, this tank full is un-vented, that being approx 7 litres less fuel.

Rick,
I think you need to fill up !
What we cannot see there is how miles you managed in total on that tank?
Was, is that tank the one pre and post head gasket failure ?
If so, you have the forum record for having a tank of fuel that has lasted the longest ! Hands down, no quibbles, the only thing is you didn't drive it for 6 months ! :p
And now onto something altogether more boring....
Finally coming to the end of my current tank and I have actually achieved the 700 mile mark.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v602/colin__/Image052.jpg
That is 707 driven and 40 remaining, total of 747 miles out of a massive great big A6 Avant with London traffic as well. Very pleased but that tankful was the most boring ever, don't think I ever took it over 2000 revs.

Bigcol, it sure is! it was actually around 9 months, :D and used around 10 litres of fuel on idle after hours of testing..
So.. 9 months to beat and the car did not move! :aargh4:
I have managed to get around 500 miles out of the Golf but that was just general motorway stop start driving..
I may give this a go the next time i fill it up!

Will be filling it up on the way home.
905 indicated range plus 52 driven equals 957 total tank range.

Amazed that the heavy old Hector A6 can do this. Will try to squeeze past the 1,000 mile barrier tomorrow.

I didn't get a photo of this as I don't have a camera phone and the wife was asleep, but...
We were on the motorway yesterday right after filling up, our toddler had just dropped off to sleep so I decided to take it slowly to let her have a decent nap and ended up sat behind a few lorries at 55MPH.
By the time I'd done about 60 miles the display was predicting I'd get 915 miles out of the tank!
Done it (on the 2nd Sept)
Broke the 1,000 mile barrier in the A6, just, by one tenth of a mile.
85.1 driven plus 915 indicated range = 1,000.1 miles !
Sadly, shortly after that normal driving was resumed and the range on this tank is likely to come in at a more real world 600 to 650 miles.
