My 2002 a4 has developed a climate control problem. For a time now I have been able to hear what sounds like gates trying to open and close behind the centre vents in the dashboard. This even happens when the keys are removed from the ignition.
The fan speed has been known to adjust its speed of its own accord in the past, but tonight I was unable to get any air blowing on to the windscreen.( no demister )
It will blow on to the floor and centre vents.
It sounds like it is trying to direct air to the screen but the gate/flap will not let the air past.
any ideas please.

I have an A4 (2003) and having exactly the problem you describe. There is no air coming out of the windscreen vents (outlets 1 & 2 within the handbook). Has anyone offered any advice?

I had exactly the same problem the other night - have been having on/off problems with my aircon over the last couple of weeks in particular with very heavy condensation on the window - for the problem with the front vents, you need to remove the glove box - really easy to do - 3 small bolts at the top, just inside the box lid and 2 underneath (need to get your head right down to the floor to see them) - remove the side panel that the door presses against and the glove box just 'drops out'.

On the right, toward the centre console, you will see 3 motors (2 toward the top and one at the bottom) - the one that controls the front flaps is top toward the front of the car (it has green plastic arms to control the flaps). turn on the ignition and press the 'up' arrow on and off to select the front flaps...if this motor doesnt move the arms then it might be broken - I had this issue but all I needed to do was to push the small green bit that attached directly to the motor down and it then moved - I think either the flap itself had gotten stuck or there was a seizure in one of the arms - anyway, problem solved.

hope this helps - just hope I can solve my secondary problem now where my zonal climate control seems to have swapped over...If I press + or - on the drivers side control it splits the zones and the passenger side has now becom the master for the control...any suggessions on a fix would be appreciated...

Press and hold the drivers side "auto" button, push the righthand side of the button, this should "lock" the temp changes and make the drivers side the master.
Press the pax side "auto" to unlock..

maxeymoo - cheers for the advice. Just done the same fix on my wife's 2003 A4 estate, worked a treat. Off to collect brownie points......

No worries - happy to help...just as an aside, I noticed when I was doing mine that the carpet in the passenger side seemed wet (see other threads regarding condensation in the car) - decided to follow instructions on removing the battery and low and behold, there was about 4 inches of water due to blocked drainage holes - I think that caused my motor arm to sieze up - might be worth a check...only took about 20 minutes to sort.

it also seemed to fix my intemittent left speaker problem...;)

Yes - been lucky with the footwells so far, no water getting in. Spotted water under the battery like you describe. Thanks to other advice in the forum we got the nearest Audi dealer to take that one in as a recall.
