I just did an oil change on my 2004 Audi A4 2.5 TDi Quattro Tiptronic.
Having warmed the engine, I first removed the oil filler cap, then
removed the drain plug in the sump. Between 4 and 5 litres of oil
drained out. I also removed the filter, and left the system to drain
for a couple of hours.
I then replaced the sump plug, fitted a new oil filter, then re-filled
with 4 litres of Shell Helix Ultra 5W 40.
On checking the dipstick level, it looks like I have over-filled. I
have since driven around 200 miles, but the dipstick still shows the
same apparent high level. The manual says that the capacity after an
oil and filter change is around 5 litres, so I'd wouldn't expect 4
litres to be a problem. The car runs fine, no obvious problems, has
anyone any ideas what, if anything, is wrong ?

How much over the dipstick are you talking? Having done a complete drain including oil filter, it seems odd you have over-filled. Only explanation is that not all the oil drained out? How I don't know. I have a 1.9TDi and never had this issue. I usually put in one the oil spec amount it 4.3 ltr. Once I get to 3.5 I keep checking the dipstick. Start it for 10 seconds then re-check once the oil has filled the oil filter!

Thanks, maybe I'm worrying about nothing, just that this is the first service I've done myself, year 1, 2 and 3 were done at main dealer, to protect the 3 year warranty.

I'm sure that I drained out more (4.5 ltrs at least) than I put in (4 ltrs), hence my surprise at the level on the dipstick showing above the full level. It's not that high, just over the top of the spherical portion (that positions the indicating section central in the dip tube) which the book says is too high. I had expected it to show a slightly level, requiring around 0.5 - 1.0 ltrs more, to bring it to the 5 ltrs the book quotes!
It has never used much oil, maybe 0.5 ltrs per 10,000 miles, which seems surprising looking at some posts.

The usage in mine is low too. That said when my mate had the car it was filled with some 0w30... At least that what it said on the invoice!! No wonder that dissapeared. I like you run 5w40!

I wouldn't worry about it. Also servicing these cars is fairly straight forward as you've no doubt seen. Some of the stories and workmanship I've seen totally nulls a dealer stamp IMO. :aargh4:
