Hi Mrs car had the engine light come on with emissions workshop message, and engine spluttering etc.

Fault codes read as:

3 Faults Found:
16688 - Cylinder 4: Misfire Detected
P0304 - 35-10 - - - Intermittent
16688 - Cylinder 4: Misfire Detected
P0304 - 35-10 - - - Intermittent
17772 - Cylinder 4 Ignition Circuit: Open Circuit
P1364 - 35-10 - - - Intermittent
Readiness: 0000 0000

spark plug, coil pack or something????:confused:

what are your thoughts can anyone point me in the right direction, many thanks,

Hi Delate the fault code and change over the coil pack and see if the fault follows the coil

This happened to me on my 2.0 Gti, I had to have the plugs leads and coil pack changed, its spot on now though.

Whats probably happened is that you've got corrosion on the contacts between the lead and the coil pack for cylinder 4, that or the plug is knackered.

Hope this helps.

it is best to read code faults write them down clear codes and then run again this will give a more accurate fault code
but plug or lead or yes coil pack

After I cleared the codes I went for a quick run up the bypass, same thing happend only code that was displayed this time was;

17772 - Cylinder 4 Ignition Circuit: Open Circuit
P1364 - 35-10 - - - Intermittent

I will have a look at the plug/coil tomorrow and swap them over with a different cylinder to see if the fault shows up there, not worked on a mark IV can you point me in the direction of cylinder 4 to save me a bit of time?

The one next to the gearbox! If you swap them around, you run the risk of having two dead coil packs as it is removal that kills them normally. Just fit a new one as if that isn't the problem it will be low compression and then wasting £25 on a coil pack will be the least of your worries.

Point taken re: £25 coil pack, I'm guessing its an electrical problem and not a screwed cylinder the car has only done 23000 miles and the mrs dosen't exactly drive like Lewis Hamilton. :Blush:

code was;

17772 - Cylinder 4 Ignition Circuit: Open Circuit
P1364 - 35-10 - - - Intermittent

Passed a VW dealer on the way home so I picked up a coil pack £27, I just installed it and first road test no problems but only a proper road test will tell I suppose (fingers crossed).

Your not kidding about the old coil it fell apart in 4 peices when I pulled it out, I wasn't even that heavy handed!!! The replacement part looks a lot better in build quality, I can see me having to do this on the other 3 time in the future.

That sounds promising. By the engine code, I meant the engine type code such as AUS, BAD etc.

The reason I wanted to know is to make you aware that you should be using at Super Plus unleaded in that car. The workshop manual states “98 unleaded (in exceptional circumstances min. 95 RON, however with reduced performance)” and if you look inside your fuel filler flap, it says something like “Min octane 98/95RON”. It is not uncommon for these engines to burn out their exhaust valves when using 95RON.
