I am still having problems with my 1.6 1994 L Reg Audi 80. The problems first started when the car ran out of petrol and it hasn't run right since. It takes ages to start and when it does I get a mushroom cloud sized plume of smoke out of the exhaust and another problem is when changing gear and the clutch is down, the revs are shooting up as though the engine is cold. I came to start is yesterday and it wouldn't start and I ended up running the battery flat. I tried to jump start it off another car but it wasn't having any so I disconnected the battery to reset the ECU to see if that helps anything.

Can someone tell me what resetting the ECU actually does and will it help at all with the problems I'm having?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi You do not reset the ECU by removing the battery terminal.By reseting the ECU means you erase any fault codes that are logged, erase learnt values, the ECU must then be adapted to the immobilizer control unit and on certain engines the throttle body must be adapted.
