I have the same problem. It is apparently caused by water ingress through the seal under the air filter box. I have had to disconnect my alarm (at klaxon under battery). I have als lost remote central locking which is controlled by the same ECU. The only real cure is to replace the ECU but apparently the wiring connections under the carpet are also prone to corrosion.
Bungalow, don't delay on this--have it checked out by VW. If you search the other threads on this forum for water leaks, alarm problems or CCM problems you will find this is a common fault that VW know about. Our alarm went off while we were on holiday, the car was towed by the council for being a noise nuisance(anything over an hour is enough to trigger this!) and we have paid £720 to have all the corroded electrics in front passenger footwell replaced plus alarm relocated. VW say they would have paid out for work as a "goodwill gesture"--bloody cheeky when it's a known and frequent fault--if it had been done by one of their dealers, but as the car was towed to an independent garage they don't want to know! Still pursuing this, not at all happy! :zx11: Good luck with yours.
