I am considering a Passat V6 4-Motion and would appreciate some guidance to make an informed buying decision. If anyone can comment on the following I'd be grateful.

Is the engine which is billed as a V6, the same as the VR6 engines fitted to the Golf?

Is the tiptronic Auto 4 speed or 5 speed?

What is the difference between V6 4Motion and V6 Synchro? Is it just a marketing thing or are there technical differences?

Is it full time 4wd or "when the front loses grip"? Does anyone know the range of torque split available?

What is the real life mpg for a car driven briskly but not constantly thrashed?

Are there any issues to be aware of in terms of premature wear of expensive parts?

How common are the consumables (oil & air filter, brake pads, discs, spark plugs) to other models in the VW range?

Does anyone change their own cambelts and clutches? I regard myself as a pretty enthusiastic DIY mechanic and have done these on straight 4 engines. Is the V6 any more difficult?

What is the typical mileage that these engines & transmissions go on to before they're not economical to repair?

Do the mirrors fold? Electrically or manually?

Do the rear seats fold?

What is the driving experience like? Years ago I had a Mitsubishi Galant 4wd GTI which felt glued to the road, which makes the vectra that I currently drive feel very dull.
Will the Passat rekindle the fun that I had with the Galant?

Is there anything else I should know or look for when buying secondhand?

Many thanks for any help you can offer, Cheers, Mark.

Hi I have a v6 tdi tiptronic 4 motion which is a fantastic car with great performance and I would recommend it to anyone except.......be prepared for expensive bills , the gearbox has just gone on mine and its a bill of about 6000euros, the rest of the car is absolutely fine though ! but it does not seem to have the robustness of some of their other cars and electrics go wrong often...or maybe Ive just got a monday or friday car.
