View Full Version : Another Boot Lock Thread:

It looks like this is a fairly common issue that arrises in different ways.

The other day my boot just wouldn't open, even though 5 mins earlier it worked fine.

Basically when I press the boot release catch it makes a noise as normal but the boot doesn't open. It also makes the same noise when using the key fob.

I can use my key manually, which works fine.

Just wondered what this would be? It makes the right noises but doesn't release.

If I wanted to have a better look at it, how do I get to view the mechanisms? Is there a panel that can be removed once the boot is open?

I have read that the actuator can be at fault, does that go from the handle to the lock mechanism?

Any ideas or help would be appreciated. I would rather have a quick look myself before being ripped off by Audi.

Thanks in advance

I have replied to another thread on this prob. a few month's ago. If you do a search you'll probably find part nos. etc. but basically it is a common problem. The switch/actuator which releases boot catch seizes up. On mine (2002 Avant TDi 130 Sport) the catch would release but then locked in open position. I took out actuator and cleaned. It operated perfectly for about two weeks then problem occurred again. Got M8 to buy & replace part (charged me about £30). Problem sorted.
From memory ....Can get at actuator by removing 2 or 3 screws from panel above catch. ( & 1 or 2 where safety triangle is on Avant). Then the panel has to be pulled off. This is why I let my M8 do job because he seemed to know how hard & where to pull panel without breaking it!! whereas I was bricking it!!
Once panel is removed part can be replaced quickly. As I said look at previous threads on this problem and you may get more detail. As you my have guessed by now I'm not that offay with car repairs!!!

Hope this helps in some way! Mitch

Thanks, this helped me as this is precisely the issue I have with my car. 50% of the time the tailgate won't open, then later the same day it's fine. I'm off to try and track down your previous post to get the part nos. and will do the job myself as the Audi dealer loves to charge top dollar for this kind of stuff (which is actually pretty simple I guess).

I did search through a number of previous threads but didn't find any part nos. So I went to my dealer parts counter to try and get a price. They weren't very good to be honest, the guy didn't seem to understand the concept of an actuator or solenoid and even looking at his exploded diagram on the computer wasn't sure what part it should be.

He suggested "boot lock cylinder no key" at circa £96 - does that sound right? He refused to give me a part no. for it. :( Not knowing if this was the right part I didn't buy it!
