View Full Version : Nokia E65 & VW Premium Car Kit

The N95 is going back in the morning. I cannot link it to my VW Passat premium car kit and it is really doing my head in. It is a 2007 Passat.
I am looking at the E65 now but before I jump, does anyone have this working with their VW Premium Car Kit without having to do any fiddling with firmware or any McGyver stuff to either the car or the phone.
Regards

I'm really suprised you couldn't the Nokia N95 to connect. I have tested one of these in my car (SEL 170 with sat nav etc) and it worked no problems. Mine's got the premium bluetooth telephone system.

No couldn't get the N95 to work - it paired but then nothing else. Couldn't make or receive calls. Could not transfer my contact list to the car.
I gave up & went back to my old phone and my old network. I shouldn't have even tried to fix it as it was not broken to start with. My wife was right - again !!

Sorry if you've thought of these before, but there a couple of reasons why I would suspect you're getting no joy.
1. Remote Sim Access needs to be switched on - this is in the bluetooth menu.
2. The kit does not work with the Three network - I guess that this is because it's a GSM only car kit, and Three only uses O2s GSM network when needed as a backup.
By the way, I stumbled upon a useful option in the bluetooth menu on my S60 phone yesterday. If you go to the list of known paired devices, then select the options for the Passat kit, then make it an authorised device, it will stop you having to unlock the phone keypad and accept the connection every time you get into the car. Nifty, huh?

Thank you David.
I had switched on the Remote Sim Access & had no joy. But your second point was very interesting as it was indeed the Three Network that I had changed to. Over the weekend I had tried a whole host of phones and encountered exactly the same issue.
Hopefully by today, I will be back on my old network again and speaking to the nation again.
Thank you again.

I have the premium car kit and blue tooth connection - can anybody confirm if it's a complete non starte to link anything other than a Nokia phone? The cradle connection is for a Nokia apparantly but in the meantime I was just trying to get blue tooth to work?
My phone is a sony ericsson

I'm afraid that is your problem. The phone needs sim access protocol, and as far as I know only Nokia and some windows mobile and siemens phones have it.

I joined this forum to try to find out how to connect a phone to the system - factory fitted in my new Passat estate 4 Motion, linked to MFS wheel, pop-up keypad (next to steering wheel) & overhead voice activation. It worked with the salesman's Nokia, but I've tried Motorola, Nokia & O2 phones but none worked. Judging by results in the archive section, I see that everyone has had problems unless they had a particular model of Nokia mobile. (With remote SAP). They, like me had been to their local main dealer (completely usless), local in-car specialist (helpful, but no answer). It seems strange that VW have designed a system that no one seems to know anything about. If it requires particular makes & models of phone to work, why don't they publish the list? It is only half thought through - much like the DVD navigation system (Not a patch on the Tom Tom I used in my V5 Passat).
Why go to the bother of re-inventing complicated electronic additions when there are perfectly functioning (& much cheaper) versions already on the market?
And why has VW not addressed the issues raised in the many posts about this subject?

Can't agree more.
I have exactly the same installation - I haven't spoke to my dealer yet about these problems or about establishing what cradle is installed for what phone in the arm rest, but I'm not full of confidence
Like you I have issues with the sat nav as well - I can't get it set up so that it recognises traffic congestion and advises accordingly (that I read it's supposed to do)

Having looked at the installation further, I found bits of kit under the front seats. On the passenger side there's an amplifier & under the driver's seat there's a black box with both VW & Nokia logos. As I've had no joy from VW, I'm going to try Nokia, even though my Motorola V3's bluetooth connects to everything else I've tried, I'm willing to swap phones. As this is supposed to be a safety feature, wouldn't you think that both manufacturers would make sure that customers have ALL the information necessary to make the system work?

Found on n95users.com forum:
Basically the N95 & N95 8Gb do work with the rSAP profiles in the Audi cars.
Switch on remote sim access on the phone and then pair from the car to the phone with the 16 digit pass code provided by the car phone system.
If you get a SIM symbol in the car display then you are on SAP mode, if you get a picture of a phone, then you are not and the phone does not support SAP.
I would also say are you sure you have a phone kit with SAP in the Q7?
Easy way to prove it is select the TEL button and at the bottom of the screen it should say something like "Find mobile phones...."
If it doesn't have this on the main screen you do not have SAP in your Audi.
Also you need to have the Nokia 810 contacts download manager running on your N95 to pass the contacts from the phone to the car kit. If you do not have this then you will only get SIM entries.
:confused:As I don't have a Nokia N95 (yet), I've no way of checking any of this.

Hi shoey1,
I tried replying to your PM, but I couldn't as I haven't made enough posts on this forum yet. Luckily I saved it before it disappeared, so I'll post it instead as it may be of some help to others(?)
If your 3109 was working before, it obviously has the correct hardware. I'm not an expert, but I know that for a phone to work it needs to have the right version of sim access - rSAP (remote sim access protocol) not just SAP, I think.
I've searched everywhere for a list of compatible phones, but with no luck. So far, all the Nokia phones I've tried work (6300, 6500 classic, 6500 slide). All of these phones are from the same generation as your 3109, so I'd expect it to work too.
I have a 3110 (same as the 3109, but with a camera) which I could test when I get a moment, but as I said before, if your 3109 worked before, then it should be OK.
I suspect that the fault lies within the phone or your network service.
I'm sure you've already done this, but in your Bluetooth settings on your phone, make sure that your Bluetooth is switched on (obviously!) and that you have selected 'Show to all' and switched Remote SIM mode to ON.
As the error you get refers to the Network, if I were you, I'd give your operator (Vodafone, Orange etc.) a call to see if they need to reset any network settings - similar to enabling you to use your phone abroad, or send picture messages, etc.
If that doesn't work, you may need to do some maintenance to your phone.
A. You could try going to nokia.com and downloading the latest software/firmware for the 3109 and reinstalling it.
B. You could take your phone to a store for them to re-flash it. Your operator might be able to do this, but I doubt it. It's more likely that you'll need to take it to a Nokia store. I see that you're in Blackburn, I did a quick search on nokia.com and saw that the nearest store to you is in Manchester, if that's any help?
Nokia
Unit 7, The Arndale Centre, 35 Market Street
Manchester, M1 1WR
Tel: 0161 8347107
You might want to give them a call first to see if they can offer any advice or to check whether they can do the re-flash.
If you try either A or B, make sure you back your phone up first to save all your contacts etc. as either of these operations will wipe your phone, thus losing all your data.
You should move all your contacts to your simcard/memory card and remove them before updating your phone. Alternatively, you may need to download PCSuite from nokia.com if you can't save everything to your simcard/memory card.
Regarding further help from Nokia, I think the best people to try are the guys at the Nokia store in Manchester, or failing that, you could call the Nokia flagship store on Regent Street in London for some advice - I think they have a help/service desk.
I hope something here works, let me know how you get on, or if you have any more questions.

Subject: Nokia - Steve Eastman - Car Kit Compatibility
Evelyn
This process is VERY difficult because my emails are answered by different people each time. As someone else will answer this one, let me outline the position:
NOBODY at NokiaCare, Nokia - accredited installers, VW, VW local dealers or any other part of EITHER organsiation can tell me for certain which Nokia (or any other make) phone will connect to the FACTORY-FITTED system in my VW. VW have only confirmed that it was designed and manufactured Nokia and tell me to contact Nokia.
So, here I am months later and STILL trying to obtain an answer to this simple question: Which phones are designed to work with the system you have designed for factory installation into VW cars?
As it is a factory-fitted option, local installers know NOTHING about it!!
Pease ask someone at NOKIA HQ which phones will work with the VW Premier Car Kit designed & manufactured by NOKIA.
Looking forward to an answer to this question.
Stephen

The problem here seems to be to do with how frequently phones are tested and the official list then updated - i.e. not frequently, or perhaps at all now...?
As posted before, I have connected a 6300, a 6500 slide, a 6500 classic and an E61 - all of which have worked perfectly. All of these models (except the E61) are current models - later than those in the above list. All of these phones have been sim-unlocked, but I don't think that would make a difference.
I haven't tried the 3110 that I have yet - my wife is away with the car at the moment, but I'll try to do it when she gets back.

I've been struggling with a similar issue for some time, there is some useful information at this thread. http://www.vwaudiforum.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?t=43615 I've had lists from Nokia and from VW (including the VW.de website) and am awaiting a further reply from VW Customer Services. I also spoke to most of the phone manufacturers.
Conclusions so far are:
1. The VW list of compatible phones is all old stuff, or the occasional newer Nokia, plus Siemens. No-one else supports or plans to support rSAP. Not Motorola, LG, Samsung, iPhone, etc. If you've just got a Sony on an 18 month contract it's tough cheese.
2. It will (supposedly) work with an N95, but may need a software update to the phone. It should work with N95 8Gb straight out of the box.
3. Even some of the phones on the list do not work, e.g. only 2 out of 3 (old) 6230i's would connect. (The other one had previously had a software upgrade to fix an old bug with the Nokia CK-7W car kit).
4. It's a fantastic system, but if all you can use is a hit-and-miss list of old Nokia phones it is a waste of money and VW are misleading the punters by continuing to market and sell this rubbish.

"It's a fantastic system, but if all you can use is a hit-and-miss list of old Nokia phones it is a waste of money and VW are misleading the punters by continuing to market and sell this rubbish."
I could not agree more!
It is little short of deception to advertise, and sell, this system as 'Bluetooth'. It may well use this as a communication system, but if it only works with a specific number of phones, then it is NOT as most people regard Bluetooth. To add insult to expensive injury, the list of specific phones is very difficult to track down. VW dealers are as much in the dark as veryone else.
I only hope that potential buyers look at this Forum before wasting their money.

Hi,
I've been away from this forum for some time, but the compatibility issues have been answered before. My last input was in this thread:
http://www.vwaudiforum.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?t=11445
and the "official" list of compatible cradles for the centre armrest and mobiles with rSap (A VW made up term) is here:
http://www.zubehoer-service.de/news/news.php?id=25&carid=9&lang=en&mcarid=
However it has not been updated by VW for a long time, and there are many more mobiles with bluetooth sim access profile (the official term).
I have used the following mobiles successfully in the Passat with the Premium Car Kit.
Nokia 6230
Nokia N73
Nokia N80
O2 Ice
O2 Jet
O2 XDA Orbit
Nokia N95
Nokia N95 8GB
The last 2 are the current mobiles used by my wife and I and are stored as separate profiles and phone books in the car kit and the kit automatically pairs to the first one it finds. It's a very good factory fitted car kit, but VW support is absolutely diabolical! I gave up with them in the end, especially when I wanted the overhead emergency buttons reprogrammed which will not work on the O2 network as they dial 0800 XXXXXX numbers which result in a recorded announcement to redial omitting the leading zero. I wish I could, but they are hard programmed into the car kit!
