Hello. I am in the middle of doing my cambelt now on my on 01 passat tdi 130 (180,000) and have just removed the radiator/front support assembly. Looking at the radiator just above the bottom radiator hose there is an electrical connection (with three spade terminals) that wasn't connected to anything! Should it be and if so what?!

Also i bought an alternator pulley because i had a slight 'chattering' noise from my engine that got worse when i turned the lights on. I assumed the extra load put on the alternator was making the alternator pulley noise. I've since checked the alternator pulley clutch and all seems fine. So i might leave it as it is for that reason and because i don't have the tool to remove pulley.

Is it possible to change the alternator pulley at a later date with the front of the intact?

Back to the subject of the chattering, i noticed that the air con compressor pumps pulley was a little 'slack' as was the idler between crank pully and aircon pulley. Is this normal? Do you think this could be the cause of the noise? Not sure if car made noise with air con on, only noticed it with lights.

The bearing of the idler didnt seem that smooth so i prised off the seals and soaked bearing in WD40, spun it, blasted it with the airline then repacked it with high melting point grease and replaced seals. It now spins more freely but is still a bit slack. Should i just replace it?

Thanks again guys

Somehow i always end up writing long posts but thank you for taking the time to read it!

*UPDATE*

After removing the alternator belt i found the automatic tensioner was wobbling around, on closer inspection the end with the pulley attached has elongated and looks like its about to fail (common fault i know). It has also worn the pulley grooves away and cut grooves in end of the tensioner.

Obviously i will be replacing this, do you think that the alternator pulley would have caused this? I ask because the pulley seems fine, i.e. it locks in the direction of rotation and spins freely in the opposite?

Should i replace the pulley or just the failed tensioner.

Thank you

You are right in your presumtions - you describe all the syptoms of a failed OAP, but it sounds like you are testing that in the correct manner too.
Even so, i might be inclined to change it, since the worn tensioner will have accelarated wear to the OAP in any case.

Id certainly change all of the rollers, even if tey seem fine - you cant accurately test them, as it impossible to test once unloaded (the inner race only wears in one place, the direction of belt tension)

Dont mean to do the egg sucky thing - but be sure to prime the auto tensioner by pumping it a few times before fitting to make sure the fluid is in the correct chamber following transit ;)

Hello I have just become a new member and I am a little unsure of how the whole forum works. I'm wondering if you can help me?

I live in Switzerland and I have just purchased an Audi a4 avant. I come from Ireland and unfortunately all the manuals are in german :(. Do you know if there is any way to get the equivalent manuals in English?

The model I have is a 2004 Audi a4 Avant 2.5tdi Quattro

I need the user manual and the sat-nav plus manuals.

I hope you can help me as I am really excited about buying the car, but unfortunately don't know how all the gadgets work.
