My '06 Passat 2.0TDI is coming up to 2 years old and I've had a reminder from VW telling me I should change the brake fluid.
My question is - is this change really necessary (the car's done about 25k miles). I'm just wondering if it's just a money making VW con - or if the fluid really degrades.
Also, so far I've taken the car to VW dealers only and I'm wondering whether I should switch to a VW specialist - does anyone know if there's a warranty issue with this?
Thanks.
Rob.

I think it costs about £50. I tend not to mess around or skimp when brakes are involved...

In a recent thread tommyweaves said he was quoted over £70; my local dealer quoted £69.

Shouldn't be - in 2004 the OFT threatened the manufacturers with action under EU competition law unless they dropped their "servicing ties", so now you just have to find a reputable garage and follow the manufacturer's service schedule etc.
Have a look at this OFT leaflet, particularly the section headed "servicing".

I've just had my first service 19000, car is a year old. The dealer put a flag on my record that the brake fluid will need changing at 2 years, i have been quoted £64 for this.
I have not checked the price at my local brake and tyre specialist but may give them a go as they do tend to be very competitive, but a year to go before this needs doing!

Have you checked at that place?
Just had my passat in today for the 2 year brake fluid change.
Cost: £39.95 including full vehicle visual check, wash, & hoover out.
I didn't think this was unreasonable.

James Tiger Woo,
No I have not bothered checking price of local specilaist yet. As i said not due for another year, but for info they were ~20% cheaper when they did similar job on previous car a Laguna
